Today’s been a big day for Chernobog. First he got his nails did, and then he got to go on a first date with a new pretty, little lady.

We used a dremel tool to sand down the sharp point of Chernobog’s spurs to help mitigate any potential injuries. Turns out he’s a true gentleman regardless.

Fertile, multi-generational olive egger eggs. 5 days old or less. Constantly collecting for when your incubator is open. PM for details.

First generation is a blue layer with a pure Copper Marans rooster. Second generation is those Olive Eggers bred back to a pure Copper Marans rooster. These eggs are the third generation, Olive Eggers from the second generation bred back to each other. See the diagram below to get an idea of the possible outcomes. Please note that some photos include eggs from other breeds mixed in to show contrast.

George went on a late night car ride to granny’s warm barn to avoid getting frostbite in the coming weather, because this silly goose loves playing in puddles no matter the temperature or weather. (And yes, this is how she rides in the car—wrapped in a blanket on my lap in order to keep her calm.)

The mixed precipitation Friday is the perfect combination for frostbite— rain immediately followed by freezing temperatures and wet snow. Frostbite can happen at 32 degrees, so be prepared. Make sure whatever substrate you use on your coop floor is dry, never place a waterer inside the coop, and keep an eye out for early signs of frostbite such as the tips of combs, wattles, or toes turning black. Once the affected area turns black, the damage is irreversible, but you then know you need to take additional measures to prevent more damage. Musher’s Secret can be applied to the combs and wattles as a preventative for frostbite and is particularly helpful for breeds with large combs and wattles. Tips for keeping your coop warm including wrapping your coop with a tarp, adding straw to the flooring or, if your coop is large enough, placing pallets against the inside walls and stuffing them with straw. If you have any additional tips, please feel free to share!

When your significant other finally accepts that the chickens are here to stay and enables you with a gift like this, then you know it’s true love. 😆 This will likely be my most used present this year. I highly recommend it, and the beginning of the year is a great time to get started on a log. (It’s also not too early to shop for a Valentine’s Day gift for that chicken lover in your life. Trust me, they will be happy.)
