Having been a farmer all his life, Layman has focused the last 15 years on raising Boer goats--long, wide, tall, heavily b***d and muscled Boer goats. "They're built like tanks!" one customer declared as she looked at the fine goats on the farm. In addition, Layman

breeds for color, especially spotted and dappled goats, along with paints, reds, and blacks. He welcomes you to come by the farm any day of the week to take a look, get goat-raising advice, or purchase does or bucks for your herd.

It's been a bit over 2 years since my partner, Layman Essary, passed away. I am continuing to raise Boer goats carrying on the marvelous lineage he so carefully developed over many years. I have moved to a different farm 4 miles from the one we worked together. I am just now getting around to establishing a new FB page under the name Judy's Green Acres. The page you are reading this message on (Essary Boer Goats) will not be deleted because I like to look at it and remember... But it will be totally inactive. If you are interested in purchasing high quality Boer goats to improve your herd, please like my new page: Judy's Green Acres. Located in southwest Missouri (just a few miles east of Springfield, Missouri).

I am doing my darndest to keep the lineage of Layman Essary’s Boer goat herd going in the direction he would have taken it. To that end, I am pleased to welcome to Essary’s Green Acres a new herdsire, Pitzer Ranch PRHP K91 Blazer. With Boer notables in his background such as Bon Joli/Lazy S-T Copperhead, LK7 Top Trail Blazer, KMBG1 King Pin, HSFG Hillside Hitman’s Dark Mark, 3LF Stargate and others, it is my hope he will sire kids of which Layman would be proud. I believe Layman would be very pleased to see this buck on his farm. Thank you to Nebraska’s great Tana Brinkman of Pitzer Ranch Goats for letting this big boy come south to Missouri.

Layman Essary Leaves His Mark on Boer Goat Industry

I had long admired the beautiful herd of Boer goats I passed every day on my way home from work. I had a few goats of my own and knew enough to realize this herd of big, colorful, spotted goats was rather extraordinary. So the day I saw a man standing near the road watching his goats graze, I slowed my car to a stop, pointed out the open window to a gorgeous black and white goat and shouted “Will you sell me that spotted doe?”

“NO!” came the reply.

That was my introduction to Layman Essary. A lifetime farmer then in his seventies, he didn’t seem to mind when he saw my car zoom up his long gravel driveway to ask questions about a sick goat or get his opinion on deworming or simply sit and visit while looking at the goats he wouldn’t sell me. Soon I was helping him hoof trim and patch fences and dry off slimy newborn goats. Hard work was fun when we were together.

Flash forward a dozen years and I find myself tearfully writing the obituary of my dear partner and friend, Layman. He was a mentor to many in the goat industry. Focusing on selecting the best of his herd to carry his trademark tall, big bodied, well conformed, colorful, and gentle Essary Boer Goats forward with each generation, he never strayed far from his farm near Rogersville, Missouri. Not interested in the show ring himself—but delighting when buyers showed and won with his goats—word spread and folks came from all parts of the nation to do what I was unable to on my first meeting with him—purchase Layman’s goats to improve their own herds.

So it is with heavy heart I inform Layman’s many friends that he peacefully passed away in his home on July 14, 2023 at the age of 88. He was born to be a farmer. Whether it was dairy cows, Appaloosa Quarter horses, or, in the last chapter of his life, Boer goats, he took great pride in and found much joy in raising quality livestock. He is very greatly missed.

Judy Domeny Bowen, Layman’s partner, will be downsizing their herd considerably. For information on purchasing Essary Boer Goats call or text Judy at 417-543-0741. The farm

At the risk of being redundant, let me remind you about the house concert Nathan Wehrman and I will be giving tonight at Singer Hill near Lockwood, Missouri. We will be singing songs about farming, ranching, and cowboying, songs that you will never hear anywhere else. And they are really good. If you are on the fence about going, thinking, well it's a long drive and I'll get home late I probably won't go… change your mind. Be there. I guarantee, I double guarantee you will enjoy yourselves hearing an evening of music you'll not hear anywhere else, you will laugh, songs will pull at your heart strings, we will talk about modern day farming and ranching, you might learn something, you might stir memories of your Farm days. If you're on the fence about going get off the fence. Plan on being there at 6:30.

See more details next post down. Call Carl Singer at 417-343-5858 for directions.

HOUSE CONCERT!
Judy Domeny Bowen (the farmer) and Nathan Wehrman (the cowboy) sing original songs about their rural lives. Judy will throw in a few old folk songs rarely--we mean really rarely--heard these days. It's a whole lotta fun!

Gather around the coffee pot at 6 p.m. this coming Tuesday, January 10. Music commences at 6:30. Singer Hill (a house concert site) is located near Lockwood/ Golden City. It's kinda hard to find so if you are interested in coming, your best bet is to call Carl Singer and ask for directions at 417-342-5858.

Come join the fun, sing along, boo and hiss if you are so led, applaud wildly at the end, and go home happy you made the trip!

==>101 Dalmatians? Meh...
==> Highway 101? Overdone.
==> 101 Singer Hill Miracle of Music home concerts! Yay, bring it on!

Come to Singer Hill Jan 10, 2023 for a resumption of the battle between the Farmers and Cowboys. It's gonna be a Music- and Storytelling-duel (no fi****ms, just guitars).

Visiting old and making new friends begins around the coffee pot at 6 pm. Music commences at 6:30 pm.

Admission: a plate of calories-that-don't-count (CTDC) finger foods, to share, and a tip to offset the costs of travel for our musicians.

Additional Details:

This month's concert (Carl's 101st, and counting!!) features Judy Domeny Bowen, Rogersville native and goat breeder (representing the farmers); and Nathan Wehrman, Lockwood native and cattle rancher (representing the cowboys). Together they trigger smile and laugh producing facial muscles; telling stories, by word and song, of the ornery goat or stubborn bovine that refused to be corralled or bossed around. Being singer-songwriters, Judy and Nathan also share other songs in their "old-time" and country-style repertoire.

As always, intermission will highlight a smorgasbord of CTDC- finger foods, punch, and water. These will be much needed to fuel those laugh- and smile-muscles.

Who's gonna win the dual between farmer and cowboy? Will it be a draw once again? Hope you can make it to find out.

Our Story

Having been a farmer all his life, Layman has focused the last 15 years on raising Boer goats--long, wide, tall, heavily b***d and muscled colored Boer goats.
