"When a hellbender finds an appetizing meal it uses its powerful suctioning jaws to slurp up and swallow the prey whole. Though hellbenders can swim they prefer to crawl along stream beds. The salamander's stocky legs and rudder-like tail p
ropel it against strong currents, keeping the animal grounded to its aquatic surroundings. Hellbenders have several predators such as reptiles and birds, and have developed brown and blotchy skin to help create camouflage against rocks for protection.
Hellbenders are an endangered species due to urban development and pollution due to agricultural runoff. Hellbenders require cool, clean water to survive and poor water quality has substantially affected reproductive rates amongst the species. Chemical contaminants have caused lower fertilization and egg development rates. Also researchers have discovered hellbenders born with deformities that include fused toes, tumors and lesions, as well as missing eyes, according to the Missouri Department of Conservation. Populations in Missouri and Arkansas have seen a 70 percent decline in numbers since 1990, notes the Saint Louis Zoo."
Everyone and everything is affected by poor water quality. Water quality is important for crop irrigation, water supplies and other recreation.
