We didn’t set out to write a book. We set out to grow our own food and give our kids a different kind of childhood.
What started as a simple goal — filling our pantry with food we could trust — became a way of living.
Season after season, we figured out systems that actually worked, made plenty of mistakes, and learned how to feed our family year-round.

This week, all of that learning officially made its way into the world — a book full of the methods that helped us, with a little of our story woven in.

Rendering bees wax is time consuming but it's also super easy!
Through trial and error this is how we render our bee's wax.
Once it's done I leave several ounces in the same old mixing bowl and just remelt it whenever I want to make salves or lip balm.
That way I don't have to clean the bowl. This time I had more than we typically use for those products so I made some candles to have on hand incase we need them - I'm using these candles as a storage method for the wax, If we need the candle - cool! It's ready to go! If we need the wax, I can just melt it down and use it.
I like to keep a spoon, bowl etc for rendering and using bees wax, but if I need to clean it off our utensils or bowls, I simply boil a pot of water and rinse them with the boiling water outside (don't really want wax in your pipes!

Me over here googling
"is cantaloup jam a thing?" - yes - yes it is!
Get creative and search for new recipes when you have excess produce - things you don't usually preserve (like cantaloupe, watermelon), or different things to do with the same foods (like peach sauce!) so many times there are other ways to preserve and use these foods to add variety to your pantry!
I've been doing this for many years and I'm still trying new preservation recipes with new foods.
Our book, The Preserver's Garden is available now!
And don't forget to stock up on canning lids, jars and more (Use gooseberry10 )

I use equal parts of all the herbs below to make this simmer pot to help clear congestion. Place a quarter cup or so of the mixture in some water and simmer, breath the steam.
Eucalyptus Leaf
Thyme Leat
Rosemary Leaf
Mullein Leaf
Lavender Flower
Peppermint Leaf
Calendula flower
Don't have everything? Use what you do have!
