I’ve started thinking about meals completely differently lately☀️

Last night at open house I overheard someone say:
“I didn’t know it was open house tonight… now we have to figure out food somewhere.”
My wheels started to turn - why do so many meal plans forget about real life?

We all have busy nights, unexpected schedule changes, exhaustion, and kids suddenly declining something they wanted 3 days ago😂

The easiest weeks seem to be where I’ve left a little breathing room, created an ingredient crossover, and given leftovers a plan. One takeout night or backup freezer meal already accounted for from the beginning. You know that winning feeling when you remember you have those Costco frozen dumplings you bought two weeks ago 😅

Stay tuned. I’m quietly working on a more realistic way to think about meal planning because honestly… I think a lot of us are trying to solve the same problem 👀

I spent Mother’s Day by a pool and immediately started thinking about how different summer gathering food is 😅
Because “bring whatever!” somehow turns into a full internal spiral about:

✨ what’s already being served
✨ whether it’ll survive the heat
✨ if people can eat it standing barefoot and wet
✨ whether it’s actually easy to share

The best things to bring are usually simple, cold, refreshing, and low maintenance.

Not necessarily the fanciest thing at the party —
just the thing people keep going back for between conversations and swims.

I think thoughtful hosting and thoughtful guesting actually have a lot in common: making things feel easy for everyone else ✨

Okay now I need to know — what’s your go-to “bring whatever” dish? Let’s hear it below!

Lighting the candles, pouring something to drink, making small adjustments before anyone arrives.

Most people focus on the table—
but lighting is what actually changes how a space feels.

It’s the difference between people standing around…
and people settling in.

It’s something restaurants understand really well.
And it’s one of the easiest things to recreate at home.

You don’t need more decor.
You just need to change the light ✨

One of my favorite traditions 🤍

Every year I donate a custom cake to the Marsh Field Day auction—and this year it made its way to a very special 70th birthday celebration 🧵✨

Designed with a love of sewing in mind, full of texture, detail, and a whole lot of intention.

Getting to create something meaningful and give back to a community that does so much… that’s the good stuff.

Marsh Field Day is a free family friendly event supporting conservation efforts and youth outdoor programs. If you’re local, come out to CWA’s Grizzly Ranch in Suisun City on June 6 and support an incredible cause 🦆

I’ve always had a deep love for the arts - the kind that makes you stop, look a little closer, and feel something.

Honored to have the chance to create a piece for Art of Dessert

This cake was my way of stepping a little further outside the box - leaning into texture, movement, and design in a way that feels more like art than dessert.

Grateful to support a place that does so much for our creative community, and to be a part of an event that celebrates spirit✨

14 years ago… this was me in the kitchen at Bridges Restaurant (yes, that restaurant from Mrs. Doubtfire 👀)

Learning under Chef Kevin—who taught me early on that the smallest details matter.

I had no idea then how much that would shape everything I do now.

From cooking → to hosting → to Beyond the Apron. Same mindset… just a different stage ✨

Forever grateful for those kitchen days 🤍

Last week, most of you voted margarita in my story poll — which felt like a solid answer.

It reminded me of something about hosting. You don’t need a full bar cart or 20 bottles of liquor to make drinks feel special. A few thoughtful details go a long way.

A garnish tray.
A rim dish.
Good ice.
A stack of cocktail napkins.

Tiny upgrades that make a drink moment feel intentional.

Hosting is rarely about doing more. Most of the time it’s just about setting things up so the room explains itself and guests can relax.

Have you ever googled ‘how to set a table?’ Which fork goes where? Why are there so many spoons at formal dinners? Am I overthinking this? You’re in good company.

Somewhere between weeknight survival dinners and Pinterest-perfect hosting…most of us were never actually taught how to set a table - we just winged it.

Let’s tone down the perfection and create a table that feels calm, intentional, and easy for your guests to move through.

Because in real life - you just need it to make sense.
Start with the plate.
Build from there.
Only set what you’re actually serving.
That’s the BTA way.

If you want the deeper philosophy behind this (and why it makes hosting feel so much lighter), the full Journal entry is now live!

Did you know I also make custom cakes?

Milestone birthdays, meaningful celebrations, and gatherings that deserve a little personality.

I love when a cake feels like someone - not trendy for the sake of it, but thoughtful, personal, and fun.

If you’re marking a milestone this year (40, I see you 👋🏻), or celebrating something worth honoring, I’m here to help dream it up💛
