I remember driving home over the mountain road. It was a beautiful day, full of sparkling sunlight, just like today. My heart was heavy with ache and grief because I had said goodbye to Remy just a few days before.
Remy was my first pet, my best garden companion, and the most cuddly cat with beautiful green eyes. He would follow me everywhere as I chored away in the gardens, taking naps under the shade of our overgrown mint, or settling on top of organza bags piled high from protecting dahlia blooms. No box or hat was too small for him to squeeze himself into. He always wanted to be on my lap, even on his last day, when it was almost impossible for him to stagger to the litter box.
I remember driving down the road, crying and missing him. The world felt full of pain. How could it still be so beautiful?
I have tried to write about Remy’s passing for the past two years, but I just couldn’t. He taught me how to love a cat. It was a blessing to love Remy.
