Just another busy morning here! Ellie and I are upstairs in our craft room this morning, printing, cutting, and getting all kinds of cute little projects ready for our homeschool field trip next week! We are SO excited to welcome all our little visitors to the farm!

I’m starting to think Ellie might make a pretty good little secretary someday! 📞😂 She’s been busy on her phone handling some very important business calls with her “customers.”

But y’all… the facial expressions this girl is making while dealing with these customers have me absolutely CRACKING UP! 🤣🤣 Apparently, customer service is NOT for the weak, and some of these imaginary customers are really testing her patience this morning! 💀😂

🍰🤎 HAPPY NATIONAL DESSERT DAY! 🤎🍰

Around the homestead, dessert usually means one thing: finding another excuse to use the good stuff. 😂

Fresh milk, rich cream, homemade butter, farm eggs, sourdough, fruit, honey — somehow they all seem to make their way into something sweet.

There is just something extra special about dessert when you know where the ingredients came from and how much work went into producing them.

Today sounds like the perfect excuse for:

🍪 Warm cookies
🥧 A homemade pie
🍰 Cake from scratch
🍨 Fresh ice cream
🍞 Something sweet made with sourdough
🍯 Or just a little treat made with whatever is already in the kitchen

Homesteading may be a lot of chores, but at least some of those chores end in dessert. 😂

🍒🍑 A Little Homemade Sweetness from Rockin’ W Ranch! 🐮🤎

There’s just something about the smell of fresh-baked sourdough filling the farmhouse! 🏡❤️

We’ve been whipping up some delicious homemade apricot and cherry sourdough dessert rolls, and goodness gracious, they turned out delicious! 😍

Sweet, fruity, soft, and made with a little patience and a whole lot of love. Sometimes the simplest things in life really are the sweetest. ❤️

Between the farm chores, muddy boots, and all the chaos that comes with homesteading, there’s nothing quite like slowing down long enough to enjoy something homemade and fresh from the oven.

🌾 From our farmhouse kitchen to yours, life is just a little sweeter on the homestead!

🥛🥚🌱 WHY WEDNESDAY 🌱🥚🥛

Why go through all the work of raising your own food?

For us, it is about much more than putting food on the table.

When you raise food yourself, you get to see the entire process.

You know how the animals are cared for. You know what goes into their feed. You see the work behind every gallon of milk, carton of eggs, loaf of bread, vegetable, and package of meat.

It also gives our family the chance to learn skills that are easy to lose when everything comes from a grocery store.

Our kids get to see that food does not magically appear on a shelf.

It takes soil, animals, weather, time, patience, early mornings, late nights, and a whole lot of work.

Is homegrown food always easier?

Definitely not. 😂

But there is something incredibly rewarding about sitting down to a meal and realizing how much of it started right outside your own door. 🤎🌾

🐄🤎 TALK ABOUT IT TUESDAY 🤎🐐

Let’s talk about animal handling.

One of the best things we can do with livestock is teach them that people do not automatically mean stress.

Regular, calm handling makes a huge difference when it is time to:

• Trim hooves
• Give vaccines or medications
• Milk
• Load a trailer
• Halter or lead
• Check an injury
• Prepare for a show
• Assist during kidding, lambing, or calving

Animals learn through repetition.

The more often they experience calm, predictable handling, the easier routine care can become for both the animal and the person working with them.

It does not mean every animal will become a giant puppy. 😂 Some will always have more personality than others.

But building trust before you urgently need it can make a stressful situation much safer later on.

🍂🎃 It’s definitely feeling like FALL around here at Rockin’ W Ranch! 🍁🤎

Freshly baked sourdough bread cooling on the counter, cherry 🍒 and apricot 🍑 sourdough jelly rolls baking in the oven, and the cutest little pumpkin decorations scattered around the house! 🥖🎃

There’s just something about this time of year that makes you want to slow down, open the windows, bake all the goodies, and soak up the simple joys of homestead life. 🍂🏡

Of course, the animals still need fed, the chores never end, and the kitchen looks like a flour bomb went off… but hey, that’s just part of the charm! 😂🐄

A little bit of cozy, a whole lot of homemade, and a heart full of gratitude. 🤎

🐄🌾 MILK & MOO MONDAY 🌾🐄

Ever notice a cow lying around looking like she is chewing gum?

She is probably chewing her cud!

Cows are ruminants, which means their digestive system is designed to break down fibrous plants in a very different way than ours.

A cow has a stomach made up of four compartments:

Rumen
Reticulum
Omasum
Abomasum

After she eats, partially digested feed can be brought back up, chewed again, and swallowed. That process is called rumination, or chewing cud.

Why is it important?

Chewing cud helps break feed into smaller particles and produces lots of saliva, which helps keep the rumen functioning properly.

A relaxed cow spending plenty of time lying down and chewing her cud is usually doing exactly what a dairy cow is supposed to be doing. 🤎

So next time you see one of our girls lounging around chewing away, she isn’t being lazy — she is hard at work digesting lunch. 😂🌾
