These are some shots of Westernville over the past 3 years. The field is constantly changing with the crop rotation. 36 beds, most of them having 2-3 plantings during a season. After 1 year of trying to fight weeds in the aisles I decided to seed white clover and just mow them with a small push mower. It's made the field greener and more alive.

Beets! Customers are either obsessed with them or they associate them with supermarket beets from a can. Fresh, local beets are so sweet and not overwhelmingly earthy. The greens are also delicious making them a 2-for-1 vegetable. I usually roast the roots in a dutch oven and saute the greens with some garlic.

I am super excited for fresh cucumbers this summer! I didn't always like growing them. It was difficult in the wet clay soil in the Rome garden. The soil in Westernville is much different and great for cucumbers. I've also had much more success once I started direct seeding them rather than transplanting. They seem to be healthier and more resilient. I combat the dreaded cucumber beetle by covering with agribon fabric immediately. I remove the fabric once they begin to flower so the bees can pollinate. Cucumber beetles usually still take over but giving the plants as much of a head start as possible does wonders.
