🐮❤️ A Ranch Legend: April
Some cows are just cows… and then there’s April.
In 2010, April became the very first calf born right here on E/6 Ranch. We watched her take her first steps in our 1st leased pasture, never knowing the incredible legacy she would leave behind.
Not long after, she became Megan’s very first 4-H heifer purchase from us—the beginning of a special journey for both a young showman and a remarkable cow.
Fast forward to today, and April has just welcomed her 12th calf into the world. Twelve calves. Twelve years of raising babies. Twelve years of helping build the foundation of our herd.
But April’s impact goes far beyond the calves she gave birth to herself.
Years ago, after the heartbreaking loss of one of her own calves, April willingly accepted and raised an orphaned bull calf as her own. That calf grew into the herd sire many of you came to know and admire—E/6 Mission Mountain Rupert. The influence of that one act of motherhood can still be seen throughout our herd today.
And the legacy doesn’t stop there.
April’s first-born calf, Ariel, born in 2012, welcomed her own 12th calf just last month. Another daughter, America, calved her 7th calf this April. And this year, yet another daughter, Ana, became a mother for the very first time.
Four generations of E/6 females. Countless calves. A family tree that continues to shape our ranch.
The rest of April’s calves played an important role too. They were either shown as Megan’s 4-H steers or sold by Megan to help pay her FSA youth loan, fees her herd, and grow her cattle fund. Those calf sales eventually helped make it possible for her to purchase her very first Shorthorn heifer—the foundation female that started her small dream herd she has today.
When the opportunity came to keep April home, we knew exactly what we wanted to do. We purchased her (and her 3 daughters) back from Megan with one promise:
April would spend her final years where she started—on the ranch she helped build.
She isn’t just another cow in the pasture. She’s a piece of E/6 Ranch history. She’s a 4-H project, a mother, a foster mother, a grandmother, a great-grandmother, and a foundation female whose influence reaches far beyond her own calves.
The numbers tell part of the story:
• April — 12 calves
• Ariel — 12 calves
• America — 7 calves
• Ana — 1 calf
But the real story is what those numbers represent: years of dedication, countless memories, lessons learned, dreams pursued, and a legacy that continues to grow.
We’re grateful for every calf she’s raised, every lesson she’s taught, and every memory she’s given our family.
