One of the most exciting parts of the blueberry season is when the bees arrive.
They showed up early this morning. They were HOT right from the start! You can hear the loud buzzing all across the field as they travel back and forth between the hives and the wild blueberry plants.
The whole farm comes alive when the bees get to work!
It is a sure sign that the wild blueberry season is underway in Downeast Maine.

Crack a** of dawn and I am out chasing deer in the blueberry fields. I counted 17 this morning. They are beautiful but with that many feeding, they can be very destructive. Eating next year's bushes (so no berries on those bushes next year) and eating this year's crop.

Which is your favorite? Fresh or baked Blueberry pie?

In the beginning of August or late July the first blueberries of the season are brought to our back door in adorable wooden blueberry boxes straight from the Welch farm’s fields in Roque Bluffs. Our bakers then work their magic and pile raw berries in a light syrup on top of homemade crust and finish with heavy grade whipped cream. The most simple, pure form of blueberry brought to you in a pie.

Today we will serve the last slice of blueberry cream for the year. Some years, if the crops cooperate we’re able to extend the season into the first week of September, but no such luck this year.

In August when we’re asked which blueberry pie you should choose…our answer will always be to get one of each. It’s the smart choice.

In honor of our last day of the season we’re going to let the masses decide…which blueberry pie is your favorite? Traditional baked blueberry or fresh blueberry cream?
