Why buy your Thanksgiving bird from PPP?
We are a 6th generation grain farm on the Palouse, and have been producing non-GMO, corn free, soy free pastured poultry since 2005. The key to our success literally starts at ground zero. We grow the grains that make up our feed ration in our own fields utilizing natural fish-based fertilizer.
Unlike other grazers, turkeys and chickens are monogastric, lack rumen, and can’t fully digest fibrous greens. The grain portion of their diet is what provides the bulk of the nutrients for muscle and bone growth. The old adage (you are what you eat) holds true for birds. Nearly 100% of commercial poultry rations are based around soy as the protein component and use least-cost formulation, often low grading grain. While this is nutritionally correct and optimizes growth for profit margins, the end result is an undistinguishable commodity.
We take a different approach. We won’t share all our secrets, and no, we won’t sell feed, we formulate feed with one goal in mind: to produce the best quality bird you can buy. For example (take notes other growers), our egg-laying ration utilizes green field peas for a portion of the protein requirement, and that gets substituted with garbanzos for meat birds. Both ingredients bring different flavor and color profiles to the end products.
Pasturing birds enhances carcass quality as well. It slows the growth rate, firms the meat, reduces fat, and adds nutrients, especially vitamin D. It also greatly improves the quality of life for the birds.
When it comes time to harvest birds, we do that too right here on the farm in a WSDA-licensed processing plant that we built. Rather than crating and trucking birds to the processor, our birds never leave home. We herd or coax them with a feed bucket. This greatly reduces stress and makes for a blemish-free, very clean product that was handled correctly.
The last part of our integration (and favorite part!) is the relationship with our customers. When you order from our website, we deliver the freshest birds on the market, which gives us a chance to meet you in person and become your local poultry farmer.
