* HONEY STAND CLOSED UNTIL SEPT. 12 *

It’s a busy time of year around here and honestly a little overwhelming! Between pulling frames for what is by far our biggest harvest ever and getting every hive prepped and healthy for the colder months ahead, we are temporarily closing the honey stand so we can focus on hive care and honey processing.

A record harvest in the books for our small honey farm and now it’s our turn to give back.

Days like this are hot, exhausting, and involve lifting thousands of pounds of full supers out of the bee yard but we wouldn’t trade this work for anything.

Beekeeping is always a give-and-take partnership. Today was the "take" part—gathering the incredible surplus the bees worked all spring and summer to produce.

But from here on out, our entire focus shifts to the give.

Now that the honey is off, it’s all about taking care of the hives: checking health, managing mites, ensuring they have abundant stores, and giving them everything they need to head into the colder months strong and healthy so the whole cycle can start again in April.

Beekeeping can be full of disappointment. Between unexpected late frosts in spring, unpredictable rainy streaks, unexplained queen loss or swarming, it’s pretty easy for a season’s nectar flow to completely miss the mark. It’s happened before and it will happen again.

But then there are moments like right now, where every single weather and timing factor comes together perfectly.

We are currently experiencing a massive basswood nectar flow. While today’s intense heat and humidity might have left some of us feeling miserable, it has created a perfect opportunity for our bees to thrive.

The Science of the Flow: Basswood (or Linden) trees produce some of the most sought-after honey, but they can be incredibly picky! The trees require adequate soil moisture, high day and night temperatures and thick humidity without actual rain to trigger maximum nectar secretion in their blossoms.

All this has to align perfectly at the end of June and the first part of July when the basswood trees actually bloom. When it's hot and sticky outside, the basswood nectar taps are wide open from sunrise to sunset and beyond.

As you can see in this video taken tonight around 8:00 PM, the colonies are taking full advantage. They are working on pure overtime—filling the sky and rushing to bring in as much of this nectar as possible before the sun goes down.

On a side note we will be out at our stand this Thursday evening (July 2nd) from 6 until 8 but on July 9th we are closed. No lip balms or lotion bars yet but we have lots of local honey and several varieties of infused creamed honey.

🐝 Behind the Scenes: Managing a "Spicy" Hive!

Ever wonder what happens when a colony of bees gets a little too cranky to work with?

We recently had a massive colony that was proving to be far too mean and defensive for comfort. Because a hive's temperament comes down to the queen's genetics, it was time for a change of leadership. We officially "evicted" the old queen and broke the big colony down into 6 separate nucleus colonies (NUCs).

Tomorrow morning, each of these new mini-hives will receive a ripe queen cell with fresh, gentle genetics from one our favorite colonies. Once the new queens emerge and take their mating flights, they'll start raising a much calmer generation of bees.

Beekeeping is always a long game—while these 6 hives won't make honey for us this season, they will spend the rest of the summer building up strength to become our powerhouse honey producers for next year! 🍯✨

We’ve really missed hanging out at the honey stand and seeing everyone! 🐝 So we are happy to say that we're opening back up for the summer starting this Thursday evening (June 18th).

We will be open most Thursday evenings throughout the summer before transitioning to Saturday mornings in the fall.

If you're out and about, feel free to swing by between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM. We’ll have our usual local honey ready to go, as well as several varieties of creamed honeys including plain, cinnamon, vanilla bean, lemon, and blueberry.

We're also really excited to share our newest creamed creation with you: Raspberry Jalapeño! 🌶️ We've been having a lot of fun making it, and there are actually several more new flavors coming down the line soon—all made with only natural, high-quality ingredients.
