Since these were our first steers to process, we really had no idea what to expect for weights. When we loaded them into the trailer, though, we could definitely feel just how heavy they were.

This was the first time our butcher had processed Dexters, and they told us they were impressed with how our boys looked. That made us feel good knowing all the care we put into raising them paid off.

Steer #1 - #199

* Live weight: 1,008 lbs
* First half: 312 lbs
* Second half: 313 lbs
* Total hanging weight: 625 lbs

Steer #2 - #201

* Live weight: 1,042 lbs
* First half: 322 lbs
* Second half: 338 lbs
* Total hanging weight: 660 lbs

The last morning with our two oldest steers. 💔 After 18 months of raising them with love, care, and gratitude, it’s time for them to head to the butcher.

I knew this day would come, but that doesn’t make it any easier. I’m going to miss them more than I can put into words. We raise our steers for meat, and this is part of that responsibility, but it doesn’t mean we don’t get attached or that saying goodbye doesn’t hurt. I actually did not name them thinking it would make this process easier, it did not.

They’ve had a good life here, and we’ve done our best to give them the very best of us. Today is a reminder that providing our own food comes with both a deep appreciation for what we have and a sadness for what it takes.

I’m so thankful for the time we’ve had with them. 💕
