This is what is below you when you step into the bee hut.

Imagine sitting safely above 100,000 bees, hearing the hum, spelling the propolis and rich cedar. Sensing that calming white noise at 200-300hz.

No distractions, no email inboxes, just you, maybe a friend, the bees, the river, the bald eagles, and the occasional breeze you hear brush up against the bee hut.

MORNING SESSIONS ARE NOW AVAILABLE šŸ
It’s finally warm enough to extend the bee hut hours into the morning — get a visit in before the bustle of the day whisks you away.

LAVENDER FESTIVAL REMINDER: Advance reservations are required for special lavender festival sessions. I can’t wait to share these shorter, intro sessions. What a multi-sensory way to experience the lavender festival that isn’t available anywhere else in Oregon.

Excited? Me too šŸ. See you at the bee hut.

šŸ A lot of people hear ā€œbee hutā€ and picture... well, a shed full of bees šŸ˜…. And they’d be kind of right when it comes to the hives common in Slovenia.

These hives, all stacked together, have a long tradition of being painted with beautiful colors and illustrations/patterns in order to help the bees tell which hive is theirs. Did you know bees recognize landmarks and unique patterns? It’s partly how they navigate through the world every day.

šŸ šŸ Bee huts have actually been part of beekeeping culture in places like Slovenia for years. Slovenia has a long-standing relationship with bees that goes far beyond honey production. Bee air therapy huts/houses are common there (fun fact: Slovenia has the highest number of beekeepers per capita in Europe), and some beekeepers have incorporated spaces where people can sit quietly near the hives and experience the sounds, scents, and atmosphere of the colony.

Whether it’s the gentle buzzing, the smell of cedar and propolis, the connection to nature, or simply giving yourself permission to sit still for a while, bees really are able to provide a place to do all of that. Spend time in a cozy retreat where thousands of tiny creatures are quietly going about their lives, gently humming. Where you can be completely unconcerned with your inbox, your to-do list, or the latest thing demanding your attention.

I used to be terrified of bees, and I’ve struggled with meditation/presence all my life.

I’m Sam, you could say the HBIC (head bee in charge — though I’m really just a bee negotiator). For the past decade I’ve run a successful and worldwide adventure elopement photography business, showing couples just what next-level adventures are possible on their wedding day. That eloping on a sailboat in Norway, or landing via heli on a glacier in Alaska is a VALID way to spend your wedding day, and you shouldn’t let Aunt Carol tell you otherwise. This past decade, a little something was missing. I love Oregon, but rarely get to photograph the immediate area. I was in search of something that connected me even more to the local world around me.

When I began beekeeping, it was in an effort to try something new and to face a fear. It was also a way to learn about something that had begun to fascinate me.

Soon, I began to stay out by the hives and just sit. Sometimes for a couple of hours at a time.

The bees’ journey in and out of the hive was mesmerizing. I could see them bring in pollen. I could experience the orientation flights. I found myself so present and in the moment. The hum of the hive, the smell wafting gently out on a warm summer’s day (propolis, honey, wax, and bees is a luscious combo). Was this what meditation was? What I’d been encouraged to try to minimize anxiety, stress, and chronic burnout for years?

Turns out, just a sprinkle of adrenaline in an environment that allows you to slow down was the key to unlocking it. This bee air therapy hut provides you with a safe place to unlock that feeling, too. That feeling of peace. The feeling of presence. Or simply the feeling of, ā€œThis is really *really* cool that 100,000 bees are underneath me right now.ā€

Hope to see you soon šŸ

xx,
Sam

P.S. mini session bee hut visits will be available during the festival in July! Spots open tomorrow āœ…. If you don’t want to miss it, get on the email list.

Back from a work trip to šŸ‡³šŸ‡“ and this visit to the bee hut included a quick downpour that made all the bees run back to the hive.

That means inside was louder than normal — almost too loud 😱.

If you’ve wanted a small taste of the bee hut without committing to 50 minutes, sign up for The Hive email list and get the booking link for 25-minute lavender festival (July 10-12) sessions when they open this coming Wednesday!

The contractor who built the bee hut (Adrian @ Urban Innovations, LLC) said he’d never had any major bee interaction before. Since the bee hut, he’s known folks who have had swarms and NOW, a swarm moved into his friend’s desk of all places.

It’s really wild how sometimes you have seasons in life that are guideposted with a specific thing. One year your life might be heavily speckled with bee interactions and then never happen again. Sometimes it’s hard not to believe that many people will come into your life just when you need them (going both ways).

Anywho, here’s the swarm capture and relocation, with me bearing the mark of my most recent sting below my eye šŸ šŸŽÆ

A quick but massive shoutout to the maker of the fabulous bee hut signs on the hut, and directing you once you arrive at .

These signs were made by my good friend .james.31, who works at . Forever grateful that he was able to making these to help visitors get to where they’re going! My decade-long job as an adventure elopement photographer doesn’t allow or pique much local community or collaboration/support, so this is such a treat to be able to patron another local maker šŸ«¶šŸ¼šŸ’›.

šŸ‘‰šŸ¼ NEW DIRECTIONS (each visitor receives detailed info in their email): Turn right at the farm and house, follow the orchard back and around to the left. You’ll see the hut across the field on the tree line! Visits are by appointment only.
