This isnā€™t bee venom therapy, this is bee air therapy. Youā€™re separated from the bees but still getting all the good energy they provide!

Bees are outside the bee hut, but the door is also on the opposite side of the bee hut as the hive entrance for ease of use and extra consideration for both you the visitor AND the honeybees.

Youā€™re also separated from the layens hives with steel mesh, so you can relax while being as close to the hives and the relaxing hum of the bees as possible.

The bee hut is open until sometime in October, depending on weather. Youā€™ll have the best visit if the weather is over 65 degrees, when itā€™s warm enough for bees to fly!

Testing honey to see just what types of nectar are in it! šŸÆ

This wildflower honey is harvested from the foothills surrounding Roseburg and while I have a fairly good idea of what it mainly consists of, I love me some real specific data.

Check back in a few weeks and weā€™ll see the honey results! Any guesses for nectar types? This is from the main Oregon nectar flow in May/June.

This is as local as it gets (did you know most honey in the store isnā€™t 100% honey, but often cut with things like corn syrup? Even if it says bottled in the US?). I should probably do a video on this, TBH.

First Place Peopleā€™s Choice @ Oregon Honey & Mead Festival!

I had absolutely zero expectations when I brought honey to enter into the Southern Oregon Honey & Mead Festival this past Saturday. Zero. I was mainly there for any comments and feedback. Iā€™d never entered honey into a contest before ā€” and quickly found out that from what I brought (i.e. not enough for a regular entry), I was only able to enter the ā€œblack jarā€ category (woops). Also, my prep game was seriously lacking; I posed *no* competition šŸ˜‚.

A ā€œblack jarā€ category is blind, taste-only judging, and was voted on by festival goers. A black jar is used so thereā€™s no bias in color, bubbles, or other appearance consideration (because some people love darker/lighter honey, and others donā€™t).

Based on taste alone, the Heathen Honey hives, with their local-to-the-Roseburg-foothills wildflower foraging produced a winner (out of several very delicious and distinct flavors). I always knew their honey was good, but itā€™s cool that a couple hundred folks at the festival thought so as well.

I learned a LOT from the judges/stewards, who were kind enough to chat with me afterward. Iā€™m always fascinated by how things work, and Iā€™m eager to try my hand at future entries, knowing what I do now.

This really shows me that Oregonā€™s biodiversity is even evident in the awesome varietals of honey we have. Damn weā€™re spoiled (as evidenced by Dr. Andony Melathopoulosā€™s talk at the festival on Oregonā€™s native bees and plants)

The bee hut has some general ground rules for bee air apitherapy and meditation:

1. I disturb the bees in-hive as little as possible aside from periodic health checks

2. They get to keep all the honey they make! If they need space, sure a few frames may be swapped but a full honey harvest isnā€™t in the current plans.

3. If a visitor is wearing too much perfume/cologne/deodorant or heavily scented clothes, is under the influence, or otherwise purposefully disrupting the bees, they may not be able to participate. The bees come first! In addition, cedar absorbs smell and your perfumed scent lingers after you leave (yes, I can smell it the moment I walk in shortly after you leave ā€” and itā€™s not subtle).

The bee hut is open until sometime in October, depending on temperatures, and then will close for the season until next spring!

When I tell you I *ran* to grab my macro lens when I saw this little gal covered in pollen from a Rose of Sharon, Iā€™m not exaggerating. She hung around the same cluster of flowers while I swapped lenses.

Nectar is in low supply now that the main nectar flow of blackberries is over for Oregon, but pollen can still be found in places. This shrub in our backyard constantly has pollinators around it.

Instead of packing pollen in her pollen baskets (her corbiculae) attached to her legs, this pollen is headed back to the hive in a more decorative way šŸ’…šŸ».

The first retreat that incorporates the bee hut is in the books! What a great day last week getting to share about the magic of bees, what we can learn from them, and so much more.

There are 2 main ways bee hut visits benefit people:

- The hum. Itā€™s gentle, and at a frequency that helps reset your parasympathetic nervous system and vagus nerve (part of that system).
- Hive air has volatile organic compounds, including antimicrobial propolis particles, terpenes and negative ionized air.

So honored to be included in the Calibration Retreatā€™s line up!

I love working smarter, not harder. Fortunately helping pollinators means often getting to be a little lazy when keeping up with mowing šŸ˜.
