Another year around the sun! Our big little boy Sully turns six and finishes his last week of Kindergarten with the most amazing teacher Betsy, his classroom for the past three years. She’s taught him oh so many things from reading and writing to math I don’t quite understand (😬), number rolling, map-making, pin punching, sewing, Zumba and so so much more. Another milestone complete as the next rotation ticks onward. Oh earth!

I learned last night that we are in a historic drought. (Thanks as always to for their informative newsletters)! Even though things are still green from a panoramic scan, we are definitely observing signs of this drought. The peonies pictured here, “Monsieur Jules Elie” and “Kansas,” are doing well and thriving in a partial shade portion of our field. These are older favorites and known to be good producers in southern climates. However, most of my “fancy” aka very expensive/ big investment peony roots are struggling this year. We put water on them a few weeks ago but alas, this season’s flowers formed long before the plants reemerged in early spring and it’s just too little too late. Thankful for these well-adapted southern beauties. I will be bunching them tomorrow for . I hope you will stop by Cathy’s magical store in downtown Oxford to grab a bunch or two.

This is man who tends to most everything out here with the exception of cut flowers. (Though he does open and close tunnels, turn off the water I forgot to before leaving the farm, and is always in search of the next branch and flowering native he can recommend). He’s in surgery today for a hernia that finally was wearing on his formidable farm spirit. Nely and I will be in charge of the pastures for the next few weeks while he recovers which might prove trickier for him than a bulging hernia. He’s used to dumping a ton of feed sack by sack for the chickens, bending for countless hours planting onions and potatoes, cutting down trees, chopping firewood, rolling out bales of hay across pastures…and he’s almost 80😳. Not sure my almost 50 year old body can do all this, but thankfully the pastures are growing and greening which means we will continue feeding hay for just another month or so. We won’t see you at market this weekend but will be back next Saturday with eggs, grass fed beef, lamb, pastured chicken and maybe just maybe some of our season’s first flowers!

So nice to see folks this past Saturday! Thanks for coming out in your shorts and t-shirts on a warm January morning. As predicted, the eggs sold out within 15 minutes, but I do want to reassure the non-early risers that our egg production will be increasing as our new flock of layers will begin to lay come February as day length gradually increases as well. Pictured is Millie (our oldest and first “Irish Dexter” brought to farm) with her most recent, surprise calf, Mickey with some of our laying hens.

Yesterday—>This morning—>This afternoon!!
40 mile/hour gusts ripped the plastic off last week (while my family was on vacation of course), but thank goodness for a respite in winter temps this week, Jorgé, his son and their intern (me) were able to get this (mostly) ranunculus tunnel covered and secured again 🤞 I’ll hope to see some of you tomorrow morning 9-12 . We’ll have eggs for early risers along with fresh chicken and our grass fed beef and lamb.

These birthday mornings seem to come more quickly these days as we celebrate Llewyn on his ninth year around the sun. We won’t be tomorrow as we have a party to host but we will see you next Saturday for our final market of 2025 on December 20th!

I emerged from weeding in the closed and cozy high tunnel the other day to this stunning scene. Rarely do I stop to take photographs these days, hence my lack of posting here…While eating lunch, I just came across this quotation in a cookbook of all places and I think image and words pair nicely; “There’s a calm eye at the center of the whirlwind. Seek it out, and time will nourish you.” I look forward to seeing you in the morning 9-12. I’ll have eggs for the early risers as well our “Irish Dexter” grass fed beef.

Oh these pretty things are heading out to lovely places in our community this weekend! I hope you will grab a bunch to celebrate fall time. Oxford folks: today! Durham neighbors: Saturday morning!

My dad will be out Saturday morning with our eggs and pastured beef and chicken (and I’ll be at a baseball tournament ☺️).
