A Smile at the Corner Market

When I purchased the local newspaper in 1998, one of my weekly routines was delivering papers to every outlet. The Corner Market was always my next-to-last stop.

Those were challenging days. Several city and county officials had been in office for many years and preferred things to remain just as they were. They didn’t particularly appreciate a young, out-of-town newspaper publisher quoting what they said in open meetings or asking follow-up questions about issues that affected the community.

There were weeks when the criticism weighed heavily on me. But one place always seemed to lift my spirits.

The ladies at the Corner Market never talked politics. They simply greeted me with a smile, encouraged the work we were doing, and often commented on how many newspapers we were selling. It was a reminder that while the loudest voices are often the critics, there are many quiet people who simply appreciate honest work.

I’ve never forgotten those moments of kindness.

Congratulations to Debbie on 31 years at the Corner Market. Thank you to the Raymer and Whittinghill families—especially Evelyn Raymer and Kim and Todd Whittinghill—for creating a place that has become much more than a convenience store. For generations, it has been a gathering place where neighbors are greeted by name, friendships are strengthened, and kindness is served right alongside great food.

My sincere hope is that Corner Market enjoys another 30 years of success, family happiness, and continued service to the Roundhill community.

Today marks 31 years of Debbie being a part of the Corner Market.
We don’t know what we would do without her. She is our chief cook that comes up with all the good stuff, our cookie maker, and our pickled egg pickler.
If we just had a way to see all the things she has seen come through Roundhill in those 31 years, I’m sure it would be quite the show!
