In a world inundated with modern apple varieties that are bred for uniformity, heirloom apples are the rebellious punks challenging the industrialized norm. This is a Winekist. It has taken a LONG time for the tree to produce. The tree has pink wood! The fruit's skin is wine red and the flesh is gorgeous and very juicy. Ours isn’t as tart as we expected—I think we picked them a bit late. Still, it has been a joy to experience this wonderful little apple. I wish we had planted more, as we got only a handful this year.

Here is our recipe for attracting lots of monarchs:
1) Mow only paths you need rather than the entire meadow. That leaves a lot of space for native plants to grow and thrive.

2) Encourage the growth of milkweed. See why in the link included below.

3) Plant Tithonia Rotundifolia (aka the Torch plant or Mexican sunflowers) - in our experience, the monarchs absolutely love these flowers, and the deer seem to leave them alone. And they are absolutely beautiful! See the link below for more information.

The photo was taken outside of our greenhouse. We see monarchs daily, and it is such a treat to watch them do their important work!

Time to Rise Up for Ukraine!

Since launching the BREAD FOR UKRAINE Campaign last Monday, the Northfield Farmers Market has raised over $1,000. For every purchase of bread from Rise Up Bakery through the market's online store, the market is donating a matching amount to the World Central Kitchen to feed thousands of Ukrainians fleeing home as well as those remaining in country. Instead of buying bread, lots of folks have chosen the direct donation option on our website.

For more information or to donate, visit https://northfieldfm.eatfromfarms.com/category/bread-for-ukraine-campaign. The fundraiser will continue through the end of the market's winter season on April 6.

Jim and Larissa Haas remember decades spent in Ukraine, where they ran a bakery outside of Kyiv

This is karela (also called bitter melon or bitter gourd). We have been growing them in Vermont for a few years and find that they grow quite well in our greenhouse (see photo). They become more bitter as they ripen so it is best to harvest them when they are tender. We love them! They pack some serious nutrition as well. One cup contains nearly 250 percent of the daily recommended requirement of vitamin C and also contains minerals such as iron, copper, and potassium. If you have access to kerelas and want to try some recipes, let us know! We will be making several dishes over the next few days to use up our small crop and will post recipes.

"Momordica charantia is a tropical and subtropical vine of the family Cucurbitaceae, widely grown in Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean for its edible fruit. Its many varieties differ substantially in the shape and bitterness of the fruit.

Bitter melon originated in Africa[2] where it was a dry-season staple food of ǃKung hunter-gatherers.[3] Wild or semi-domesticated variants spread across Asia in prehistory, and it was likely fully domesticated in Southeast Asia.[2][4] It is widely used in the cuisines of East Asia, South Asia, and Southeast Asia." - Wikipedia
