We’re about a month away from opening for Pick-Your-Own blueberries!
A lot of work goes into these bushes before the berries are ready to pick, so here’s a little overview of what we do each year:
• In early spring, we prune all of the bushes to encourage healthy and productive growth.
• We take soil samples to determine what fertility and pH amendments may be needed.
• Based on those results, we apply any necessary soil amendments.
• This year, we applied a fresh layer of wood chips to help with w**d control and moisture retention. We typically do this every other year.
• We have just begun working our way through the field, pulling w**ds and vines that are starting to grow in.
• Lastly, we’ll put the nets on to help protect the berries from the birds as they ripen.
If you watch until the end, you can already see the berries starting to size up. They’re still a ways from being ready, but it’s exciting to see the crop coming along.
There’s still plenty to do, but blueberry season will be here before we know it. We look forward to seeing everyone in the field soon! 🫐
