During the busy work of preparing for National Alpaca Farm Day last week, Selectra sent us on a side quest! After feeding Opari her bottle, Laina checked our cameras that cover the whole farm and saw a placenta on the ground in the preggo ladies’ pen. She put out the call and everyone headed down. We had a placenta but NO BABY! 😳 Selectra wasn’t stressed or showing signs of anything going wrong with the birth. We started looking everywhere! No baby. Then, Laina hears a rustle of leaves and sure enough, about 25 feet away from the fence, in a dirty pile of leaves, under a lean-to, against a small stack of pallets is this tiny angel. In her determination to get up and meet life head on, she rolled under the fence and scooted her way along. We picked her up, brought her back into the fence, and mom realized what had happened. She immediately went to her beautiful baby girl, humming, clucking, and so happy to see her. We got her dry and warmed up. She was up, walking and nursing in no time. There’s never a dull moment in alpaca life, but a placenta without a baby was definitely a first.😉
