Stinson Brook Farm Small homestead offering cut flowers and honey

The first planting of the season is officially in the ground.

The kids were happy as it meant they got to hang out in the back of the car watching a movie while I planted in the rain.

I also spent time reclaiming a bed that had gone untouched for a few years. I could have used a tiller to break it up quickly, but tilling actually disrupts the soil structure, damages fungal networks, and brings dormant w**d seeds right to the surface. Healthy soil is alive, and the less we disturb it, the better it can do its job.

Instead, I used a broadfork to loosen the soil while keeping all that underground life more intact. I w**ded the bed out too, but it doesn’t have to be perfect since I’ll be laying black plastic down before planting. It was definitely more work, but the broadfork handled it just fine. Got a little muddy in the process.

Decided 10,000 bees wasn’t enough… so we added more.

We brought home another colony today — this one is a nucleus colony, or ‘nuc.’ A nuc is basically a small starter hive with a queen, worker bees, brood (baby bees), and food already established and working together as a mini colony. Instead of starting completely from scratch, they already have a head start building and growing.

It felt pretty appropriate to add another colony on World Bee Day

Getting beds prepped, irrigation laid, and plastic down has been the focus around here lately.

It took a little longer than expected to finish everything up, but that’s just part of balancing farm life with three small kids and a full schedule. One thing farming continues to teach me is that not everything has to happen all at once.

The beds are finally ready, a little planting has already begun, and it feels good to see things coming together one step at a time. Maybe someday I’ll have a tractor to make it all easier 😅 but for now it’s a whole lot of hard work, slow progress, and gratitude for this life.

To all the moms, grandmothers, bonus moms, and mother figures — Happy Mother’s Day! Your love, strength, and care shape so much of the beauty in this world.

Along with Mother’s Day bouquets, I also had the opportunity to create some prom corsages and boutonnieres this weekend. A big thank you for letting Stinson Brook Farm be a small part of your special moments. There is something so rewarding about creating flowers that become part of memories that will last forever.

I’m endlessly grateful for your support of our little farm.

Bees are back on the farm 🐝

This is just a quick overview of installing a hive— a little peek at the process. If you’ve been here a while, you know we’ve shared more in-depth install videos in past seasons, and those are still up if you want the full breakdown.

For now, we’re just happy to have the hive buzzing again and a new season underway. We plan to add at least one more colony in the next couple of weeks.

Mother’s Day is just around the corner 💐

If you’re looking for something simple, beautiful, and meaningful, I’ll be offering bouquets, small arrangements, and larger arrangements. Everything will be designed in that natural, gathered-from-the-garden style I love, using blooms I source from trusted growers.

Message me to order or with any questions.

It’s snowing again 🤦🏻‍♀️ this color combo is helping me through it though.

Still waiting on my own blooms to wake up, and I won’t pretend I’m patient about it… but for now, these grocery store flowers are enough. A little reminder that this season doesn’t last forever.

All these flowers from my trip to Charleston have me counting down the days until ours start blooming.

A little peek into what we have been doing lately here on the farm.

Spring is starting to show itself, and we’re here for it.

03/05/2026

In my excitement for spring, I pre-sprouted my ranunculus a bit early… forgetting that my basement is less “cool spring greenhouse” and leans more towards “tropical resort.”

When ranunculus get too warm without strong light, they grow fast and spindly. All that energy goes into reaching instead of building sturdy stems — and we want strong, stocky plants that can handle early spring.

Instead, mine are now a little too tall… very leggy… stretching dramatically toward a sun they cannot find. Honestly? Relatable.

So we pivot.

They need real sunshine.
But not too much heat.

Which means I’m building a cold frame.

A cold frame is basically a tiny, unheated greenhouse — it lets in beautiful natural light, shields plants from harsh wind and frost, and stays cool enough to slow that stretchy growth and help them toughen up properly.

The best part? I didn’t buy a thing. I wandered the farm and gathered what I could find — scrap lumber, a few extra fridge shelves, and some screws I managed to find.

Sometimes growing flowers means growing your problem-solving skills too.
