Happy Spring!!

First harvest of asparagus is available for $3/lb. It will be in limited quantity at first, so first come, first served! The rhubarb is ready for harvest too and also $3/lb.

The tomatoes down in southern Iowa are coming along nicely, but is still several weeks away from first harvest. You'll be the first to know when veggies start becoming available.

Just a reminder.... our chickens LOVE pumpkin and we would be happy to take your jack o' lanterns off your hands. You can drop off here at the farm or maybe we can coordinate for us to stop by your house to pick up, if you aren't too far out of our way.

We have a good supply of sweet bell peppers and a variety called Mexibell at the farm, if you are needing fresh for making salsa or do what we just did this morning. Removed stems and seeds, chopped up finely and bagged for the freezer. I use in our pepper jellies and for when making omelets at home or a big pot of chili in the winter. Prep work already done! 4 for $1.

Mexibells are perfect if you want that sweet bell flavor and a little bit of heat. Similar to banana peppers.

It's that time of year for Concord grape juice prep! My best sous-chef is back in action picking grapes off of their stems to prep them for the steam juicer. Just in time too, since I just used my last bag of juice out of the freezer. Thanks, Ben Wobschall, for growing such beautiful Concords!

And yes, Mike is coming back (although slowly) from his right hip replacement surgery on August 11. Finally gave up the cane about a week ago and has been doing chores. Improves day by day, slowly, but surely.

Just as an FYI follow up.... a 5-gallon bucket of Concord grapes still on their stems yields 31 cups of juice!!

Hello folks! If anyone is needing canning tomatoes for your winter supply of salsa or spaghetti sauce, let us know before tomorrow morning. We are making a trip down south after many weeks of recovery from Mike's hip replacement surgery. He is not 100%, but getting there.

I'm seeing there is a limited amount of Roma tomatoes coming in, along with the usual canners, if that interests anyone. Don't know if any pickling style cucumbers are will be available, but we'll try to pick some up if you are needing any. Limited amount of beets for pickling are coming in too. If you are looking for quantities of sweet corn for your freezer, we may be able to set you up with that too. PM me is best on my cell.

A Canney Farm update:
Mike had his left hip replaced Monday afternoon and was discharged from the hospital Tuesday afternoon. He is not doing very well and in a lot of pain when getting up or down. Took us 10 minutes this morning for him to figure out how to sit up to the edge of the bed without excruciating pain. Whoever said this type of hip replacement is less painful and easier is full of beans!! Once he is standing or not moving, the pain is manageable. Walking is slow, but becoming less painful, so that's a plus. I think he is going to be spending the next few nights in his new lift chair.

We are sooo grateful for the two young men, Chad and Endyn, who are helping us out with farm chores. Could not make it without them. It truly takes a community and we are so thankful we have a supportive one.

I'll post more as things move along.
