Agricultural lesson #1

So for those that don't know much about Bovines ie: Cows/Bulls and even Bison this is for you.

If you are not sure where baby cows come from, here is a Cows nest. As you can see the eggs in this particular nest are all white. Now white eggs generally mean that the cow being born will either be a beef cow or a dairy cow that will only produce white milk. But if the eggs are brown (Which is more rare) you will end up with a cow that is used solely for the production of chocolate milk.

The more you know.

Sunlight beaming through the barn walls in tonight's sunset.

Every now and again, when you are in the middle of a mundane task (like loading hay out of the barn tonight), God surprises you with some unexpected beauty if you slow down enough to notice and appreciate it.

So if you are a hay farmer, what else do you use to decorate for the holidays but a BALE OF HAY. Kuddos to my very creative wife and daughter for coming up with this one.

Hay Season 2022 is officially over. From the first round bale on May 26th to the 8,129th square bale made this afternoon (October 16th), it has been a long and productive summer. Oh, and 264 round bales along the way also.

Time to get start preparing for Hay 2023. And get reintroduced to the wife. 😁

A visual representation of why you should support your local farmer. Imagine all the things that can happen when the jar on the right has only a few M&M's that are owned by mega-corporations.

A couple weeks ago when I was a volunteer for career day at my daughters school, an idea was brought up that was similar to a Texas Farm Bureau display, but I chose M&M’s, because kids love to see M&M’s!

It worked. Every child that walked up wanted them. Which created a perfect opportunity and focus to show them that there are an estimated 333 Million people in the United States.
The ones that are responsible for growing their food & fiber, make up only 0.60% of that population.

Farmers are highly outnumbered already. With a fast growing population and a decrease in farmers, it seems a little concerning for our future.

Marketing at its finest by those who sell 'organic' milk. BTW, this ban on antibiotics is nothing new. As a kid growing up on a dairy farm in the 1970's, the driver picking up our milk would collect a sample from our tank before loading for just this reason.

Instead of listening to marketing spiel in a 30-second commercial, a much better way to understand where your food comes from is 'Know your Farmer, Know your Food'.

All milk is free of antibiotics, no matter if the label states that or not. Test samples are collected on all milk before leaving the farm. All milk is tested at the plant before it is used. So, whether you choose regular or organic, you can feel good that milk is among the safest, most nutritious foods on the planet.
