The beginning of Shorthorn cattle on the Meyer Farms, under the name A.J. Meyer and Sons, was in 1933 when Ed's father Allie purchased twin Shorthorn heifers. They had many champions at the Eastern Indiana Gold Medal Shows and in 1958 Ed exhibited the Reserve Grand Champion steer from his Shorthorn entry at the Indiana State Fair. Allie continued to grow the herd until his passing in 1971. The her
d was split among the brothers and this is when Ed and Connie started their own herd under the name Meyer Farms. He used several sires, including MaineMan, to improve the herd. Ed raised MF Pacer, which went on to be named 1998 Grand Champion Bull at the Illinois State Fair. Ed's most productive cow for high quality calves was Rexlaine Ruberta's Romance. She was the mother to MF Pacer, MF Boomer, MF Pacemate, and MF Paige. He also produced MF Dixie, followed by MF Brenda Pace. Both were Indiana State Fair champions. Meyer Farms now has 60 cows, of which 50 are purebred Shorthorns. Current herd bulls include WHR Cherokee and Phildon Absolutely. Ed still owns and works the grain farm and cattle herd. He continues to advance the herd with AI and embryo transfer. Ed never gets enough of "cattle talk" with other breeders and always has fun at shows and sales mingling with his Shorthorn family.
