So gentle with the babies, and then it was time to do his job. This is what makes a good guard dog. Knowing when to be kind and knowing when it was time to throw down.
I’ve looked for fully trained livestock dogs and they go for $1200 and up, they can be the most valuable thing on a farm or ranch. I just don’t have the time to train a puppy or untrained adult dog. Deo took over 2 years to be fully trained and trusted. Mikey came from someone who had tested him against their own animals(goats and chickens) but there were still challenges with him I had to get past. But the thing that I loved about Mikey was that he knew when a person was supposed to be there and when they weren’t supposed to be there. The other two followed his lead, so now they are not going to have the confidence he gave them. I watched Mikey take on multiple dogs at once and send them running. My husband watched him take down the drug addict who is clinically insane that walks the county road when he flung his arm towards my husband. That dog took his job seriously and all I had to do was point at whatever I wanted off my property and say “sic em”. He’d take care of the problem and then come back to proud and looking for pets after his job was complete.

On to the next move! The goats sure love moving day and so does the pony. New food and new views!

Dear Mikey(Big Mike),

Thank you for your years of service to us. You were hands down the best protector a homestead could dream of. You kept everyone safe, not just our animals. Your presence will be deeply missed here. You became a mascot of the farm to those that visited and you never let a kid get out of your sight. You’d ferociously protect us against any harm and I always felt safe with you on watch.
