Since a few people have asked 🩷 No, I probably won’t have peonies for sale this year. In the flower farming industry, we like to let new peony plants work on their roots for 3 years before harvesting the flowers. It takes a lot of energy for the plant to bloom, so most buds are disbudded as soon as they appear. I will allow a peony plant to bloom a flower or two so I can make sure I have the correct variety and then I cut the bloom off without many leaves. More leaves = more energy for the plant to gather through photosynthesis. I planted my peonies spring of 2024, so hopefully next year I can start harvesting blooms for bouquets!

Here on the farm, we try to practice regenerative farming. One of the tools we use is a broadfork. Broadforking is a no-till gardening technique used to loosen dense, compacted soil without destroying the delicate soil food web. By plunging a specialized multi-tined fork into the ground and gently leaning back, the earth is aerated, water drainage is improved, and channels are created for root growth while leaving soil layers and microbes undisturbed. Broadforking increases beneficial microbes and earthworm activity.

After we broadfork, we add compost to the top and mix it in. We are left with light and fluffy soil to plant our baby seedlings into.

Broadforking helps us care for the longer term health of the land.

The last of the tulips go out today. I am so pleased with the tulip harvests this season. We did have a couple bumps in the road like something getting into the tulip bed and digging around damaging some blooms. We think it was a racacoonie 🦝 But overall it’s been a wonderful tulip season!

What do chickens have to do with flowers? Well, on our farm we try to be as sustainable and regenerative as possible. With chickens, we do a closed loop garden system. In addition to their chicken food and treats, we feed the chickens some table scraps and yard waste. We then add their manure to our compost bins where once it’s aged we add it back to our flower beds as a vital nutrient for plant and microbe health.

We transform their waste into an important resource. This process cuts down on fertilizer costs and external inputs.

We love our chicken friends as a source of eggs for our family as well as helping keep the pesky grasshopper population down.
