What a way to make our day!

A heartfelt message from a parent sparked conversation across our entire office and culinary team.

Our freshly made bolognese sauce is packed with vegetables, the kind of fuel growing kids need. Notes like this are a powerful reminder of why we do what we do: helping students discover healthier food choices that support both their learning and long-term well-being.

The timing couldn't be more meaningful. Friday, May 1 is School Lunch Hero Day, and we'll be sharing this message with our entire team as a way to recognize and inspire the people behind this important work, and we’re proud to share this with our SCUSD community.

To the families who take a moment to reach out - thank you. Your words fuel us just as much as our food fuels your kids. 💚

The Central Kitchen is bringing a little spring to the lunch line.

Our upcoming Spring Feast includes applewood smoked BBQ chicken from our applewood chip smokers, roasted potatoes, ambrosia salad and Caesar salad all freshly prepared by our culinary team.

Programs like this show how school meals work for everyone: supporting our local food system, putting taxpayer dollars to work in our community and helping families by making sure *every* student can enjoy a hearty meal at school.

Two unlikely partners, one shared mission. Central Kitchen's Kelsey Nederveld and executive chef John Trujillo of Mulvaney's B&L joined voices in the Sacramento Bee to make the case for supporting our local food systems and the growers who make it possible. When school nutrition and Sacramento's fine dining community speak together people listen.

🎉 We’re expanding to additional schools and increasing the number of volunteers, thanks to a recent grant!

We are a sub-recipient on the California Department of Food and Agriculture “Farm to School” Grant under the leadership of Sacramento City Unified School District’s (SCUSD) Central Kitchen school lunch program.

Our partnership with The Central Kitchen - SCUSD Nutrition Services dates back more than a decade, and remains one of our most innovative program partnerships.

As volunteerism has declined nationally since the pandemic, maintaining our 1:10 teacher-to-student ratio has become one of our biggest scaling challenges. We send only one paid educator to each school, making volunteers necessary as we grow.

One solution is to train part-time Central Kitchen cafeteria staff as volunteers. Central Kitchen allows them to work more hours to support our hands-on cooking classes.

The impact:
📚 Expanding to 3 more schools in SCUSD.
👩‍🍳 Trained 20 Central Kitchen staff to date to support classes.

We’re excited for what’s next. Follow us here to see this growth in action and stay connected as we expand!
