Summer gives more than you can eat in a day. The question is what you do with the rest.

When we decided to keep sheep, we knew there would be a learning curve.

Unlike chickens, sheep need more space, more food, and more care when they give birth.

Our first two seasons were rough.

Bottle-fed babies.
Blow dryers and wood stoves late into the night warming cold sheep.
Babies that didn't survive.

This is the rarely talked about part of being in a relationship with animals.

We were discouraged, and we kept going.

We read books.
We took classes.
We asked other shepherds.

But most importantly, we learned to fall back and let nature take her course.

That made the difference.
This year was different.

End of winter births.
No bottle-fed babies.
Everyone survived.

What we've found is that everything we do stewarding the systems of nature can be applied to daily living.

We're looking back on the day a local school came out to the farm — and the photos say it all. Rows walked, questions asked, and a flock of chickens surrounded by a whole lot of curious hands.

There's a lesson in those birds that no worksheet can teach. The chickens aren't just here for eggs — they break down compost, aerate the soil, and move the cycle forward. When a child feeds them, they're not doing a cute activity. They're participating in how life actually feeds itself. That's the kind of learning that stays: knowledge you can put your hands on.

On this land, education isn't theory. It's application. We're grateful to every student, teacher, and family who spent the day with us, and we'd love to have more.
