HF Bar Ranch

HF Bar Ranch We are delighted that we are celebrating over 113 years of welcoming families and friends from all over the world to the HF Bar Ranch!

The HF Bar Ranch has a special use permit with the Big
Horn National Forest and is an equal opportunity employer. Situated in a pristine valley on nearly 7500 acres bordering Wyoming’s Bighorn National Forest, the HF Bar Ranch is the second oldest guest ranch in America. The Ranch has received placement on the National Register of Historic Places along with being named one of the “1,000 Places to

See Before You Die”. The HF Bar Ranch has been widely acclaimed by such notable national publications as the New York Times Travel Section, Travel & Leisure magazine, Parent’s Magazine, Town & Country magazine and Western Horseman. As much as the Ranch tries to keep a low profile, Margi has garnered much local and regional recognition for her efforts on the HF Bar Ranch during her last 30 plus years as steward. In 2007 she was named Business Person of the Year for Buffalo, Wyoming , and the HF Bar Ranch was awarded Land Owner of the Year in the BigHorn Mountain region for our conservation efforts and generous land access granted to the public. As Eugene Kilgore states in his terrific Ranch Vacation’s guide, which is coming out soon in its 9th Edition:

“The HF Bar Ranch, one of the great old dude ranches in America, has preserved that old-ranch feeling. Since, the late 1920s, this ranch has received distinguished guests from around the world…..it’s a great ranch for the entire family and children of all ages from five to ninety five.”

In 2012, our best news of all is yet to come. This year, the majority of the lands of the HF Bar Ranch will be placed, under a conservation easement through the Wyoming Nature Conservancy and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. This will allow the ranch to continue on as a working guest ranch that welcomes people from all over the world. At the same time, we will all be well assured that the pristine land that this ranch sits upon will remain undeveloped and open forever. We hope to continue welcoming guests for many more generations to come. Please understand, the Ranch will remain under the same ownership and management. And, forever, these lands will remain unchanged.

This is the "get it going and tune it up" time of year. The nights can still be chilly. The grass isn't growing that much but
things are getting green
and the trees are almost leafed out. It's forecasted to be a dry year. We're just checking on what's got to be trimmed, cut out, repaired. With our lilacs, and some other bushes around the Ranch, we're seeing that a late freeze prevented a lot of them from blooming and even filled off a few. Grateful for pruning shears and, seeing the smiles on a young weekend visitor! She heralds what lays ahead very soon!

The HF Bar Ranch is a Wyoming Guest Ranch where guests are mesmerized by our rich ranch style atmosphere and amazing views!

Prepping for the summer... so much to do! Yesterday, we did a little building placement. We have moved more buildings around this ranch and it's something we just love to do. The old Ice House where ice was crushed for meals held to grinders but chopped the ice block into chunks that would fit in a glass. Best ice ever cuz it never melted! We've evolved to a machine now but we kept the old ice house for posterity. It is at least 65-70 years old. Now, it is art! See if you can find it when you come this summer and oh by the way it's hiding and protecting some new water pipes and a parking area. A little more authentic.

Double your pleasure, double your fun...with two schools from Sheridan: Big Horn Elementary and Highland Park.
We did a little reverse tour, along with our usual one. Everyone had time to see the horses, go through the cabins, have the traditional chocolate chip cookie-making math lesson! Then, everybody gathered together for lunch, did some playing on the playground and lawns, went on a hayride and made the traditional s'mores. It seemed that everybody had a grand time! This is a wrap for us for the 2026 school season. These past few weeks have sure been fun and they've helped all of our new employees get into the swing of their summer jobs!

We are big believers in reduce, reuse, recycle and sustainability as best we can do it here in Wyoming. Every year, we get some young pigs to feed all the leftover scraps of food from our guest tables. This year we have five strapping young pigs who will summer with us and clean up all of our extras. It keeps the skunks and raccoons out of our trash and they move on into the food chain. Plus, they're pretty cute!

Yesterday's late afternoon drive away from the Ranch. The light right now in the hills with the green grass and vibrant other colors is simply surreal. Feels like we're living in a painting.

The sunshine turned on just in time for Coffeen Elementary School from Sheridan, Wy. to have their annual third grade field trip. It was all the usual fun stuff from the math lesson calculating how to make 100 chocolate chip cookies from the recipe they were given for 20. They shouted out their mathematics skills right everytime! To the Corral, thru the cabins, to the peacocks to the playground. There were two intermediary stops for cookies, a burger'ndog cookout, concluded by s'mores before they headed out the door! Our summer staff members lined up for introductions where they go to school and what their jobs are for the summer! It's a highly educational day with great exposure to new ideas and people!

We're getting a fair amount of rain at the ranch and some misty weather. The creek is pretty low and although all the snow melt hasn't happened, we hear that they're having a tough time filling the two reservoirs above us that many rely on for irrigation water. Hoping for a couple more weeks of some good rains! We're fine at the Ranch, but it's our neighboring farmers and ranchers we worry about who are raising crops. Our " main crop" (our guests) feeds itself in the winter!
