After going back and forth, we decided to buy this Dexter bull calf to be our herd sire! Chaney’s Bolt will be coming to our farm on 9/26 and will be hanging out with our ram and wethers until he can go in full time with our heifers! I am so excited to bring such a quality bull to our farm. Bolt is out of Maverick, currently living at Sweet Briar in Michigan, has an excellent temperament and carries the dun color. Huge thanks to Old White Barn Farm in TN!

We’ve now come full circle with our plans for breeding and are going to AI our oldest Dexter heifer, Morgan. We will be buying straws from Grandma’s Dexter farm in Iowa for their bull, Waldo. He is probably my favorite out of all that they have and they have plenty. Some non-negotiable for us this time. I wanted a black bowl that carried dun, I wanted a good temperament score, calving ease score and birthweight score. I wanted A2A2 and not super tall. Also, homozygous polled was a non-negotiable. After having a jersey with horns, who was an absolute terror, I will never have another horned cow.

We have one mom left to deliver and I think she could go pretty much any day. I’m thankful she has bagged up just a little bit more and I feel pretty confident she’s having twins. Since the sire will be our new ram, Jasper, I anticipate white lambs from her and not Black. I love black hog Island lambs but as long as they are healthy and she’s healthy and delivers as well, not complaining. Also, while I’m asking for things, I would really like to have twin girls.. we would likely keep both to round out or flock after losing Monkeu.

Also, let’s ignore that. I called her Lacey for a second. She’s not too offended. Macy’s ears have grown to that of an enormous cow, so I think she has big plans over the next year. ❤️

So I’ve started the process to have monkeys hide tan. We are trying to use everything we can from her. We loved her so much and it’s been really difficult mentally to have to process her. So the first step after I got the hide back from our processor was to salt with the hair side down. It sits in salt for 48 hours and then I’ll let it dry for another 24 hours and pack it up to send to Oregon.

Hey, tell me how to get rid of these horse flies. I absolutely hate them and I hate that they’re bothering Hank so much. Also, are flies worse on black cows?

We’re burning up down here in Kentucky, and it finally stopped raining. So, our pasture quality is going down, even though we still have grass. Since I have one girl left to lamb, I decided to start supplementing with a bale of Orchard grass Hay and a protein and energy tub for the sheep. I’m also completely dumping their water once a day and refilling with cool water.

Dexters vs Angus cows on our farm, episode 1.

Dexters: I will take even decent pasture and slowly turn it into growth and beef and keep incredible condition.

Macy: please add sunflower seeds to my diet, I’m not getting enough energy from late summer pasture so I’ve only gained 20lbs in a month (too little). 🫠🫠🫠🙄

Calves, especially bottle calves, are going to go through a growth slump for about a month after weaning. We are definitely there. I have been taping Macy constantly checking her weight and she was stuck at 230lbs for what felt like 8 years but it’s been a few weeks and now she’s up to 255lbs. That’s very light for an Angus calf, but I think she was actually born prematurely. When I picked her up, she weighed probably 30 to 40 pounds rather than being born at 50 to 70 pounds.

So, since I have a full bag of Nutrena Nutrebeef 15% commodity pellets, I’m going to be adding a quarter cup twice a day of black oil, sunflower seeds to her ration. It seems like a very small amount, but it’s incredibly concentrated fat for her.

Macy. This baby cow turned our lives upside down beginning on March 25th.

It’s kind of funny, either everyone is in the mineral tub or no one is in the minerals. Today, everyone is in the minerals. Macy has grown from a 30 to 40 pound calf in questionable health to a 255 pound calf. She is such a sweet girl, such an odd turn of events since I thought I was going to pick up a bullcalf that day.
