Last Sunday I tried to add a super honey box to the hive and got stung 8 times (through my bee suit).

I learned that the bees are very aggressive in the summer heat and I also found out that I am somewhat allergic. I ended up getting a cortisol shot at urgent care last Monday and was also prescribed an epi pen.

Since then, I bought a much nicer jacket, face shield and gloves and was able to thoroughly inspect the hive this evening.

It was still unnerving to open the hive back up tonight…but it was good to see the bees buzzing up close and personal again.

So far I am up to 10 stings this season and won’t even be able to harvest any honey until next year.

As temperatures rise, it's essential to make adjustments to ensure our bees remain healthy and productive. Today, I removed the entrance reducer from the hive. This simple step increases ventilation, helping the bees regulate the internal temperature of the hive more efficiently.

We also observed "bearding" – a behavior where bees gather on the exterior of the hive in large clusters. This occurs when bees move outside to cool down and reduce the internal heat of the hive. It's a fascinating natural adaptation that highlights their incredible ability to manage their environment.

We checked in on our hive before the storms came through and everything seems to be in order! We had our queen in a queen clip to help the hive get established for the first few days after the initial setup.

As soon as I opened up the hive I could smell the sweet smell of their hard work already 🍯 🐝
