Mushroom foraging season is coming to an end in Colorado, but there are still some out there! Pictured here is an Armillaria solidipes, otherwise known as the dark honey fungus, that we found just a couple days ago at one of our spots. 🍯 🍄🟫❣️Most people know about this fungus now as it is the largest known organism on the planet. The mycelial mat lives underground in the old growth forest of eastern Oregon and extends about 2400 acres! 🤯🍄🟫 It is a commonly known edible mushroom, however many people do suffer from GI upset after consuming. It is very well reported that this mushroom MUST BE THOROUGHLY COOKED in order to be properly digestible. Many people choose to just eat the sautéed caps as the stalks tend to be quite fibrous. This mushroom puts off a beautiful white spore print, and grows in areas with decaying conifers. Keep foraging friends! 😁
