The Dirty Burger was a real hit on the 4th of July. Grass-fed organic beef, ground pork, slow cooked shredded pork butt, and a brioche bun drenched in house red chile sauce.

Didnt get to try it? We’ll be back again both Saturday and Sunday on main street in Del Norte

Home raised 2 year old bulls looking good the day before turn out. We’ve put a lot of selection pressure on these boys, making them graze pretty rough stuff all winter with only a little bit of protein supplementation. They’ve blown up since we’ve put them on green native range, which speaks to their fleshing ability/grass efficiency. These are true range bulls, adapted to a dry, tough high altitude environment and an entirely grass-based system. By using bulls from our own herd, we’re able to refine our genetics and improve the overall adaptability of all of our cattle.

That being said, we have 3 yearling bulls for sale currently. Their PAP scores are a little high for what we want here at 8,000 feet, but they’d be great at a slightly lower altitude. DM or email for more details.

BIG SAVINGS ON GRASSFED BEEF!

While our processors do a great job packaging our meat, sometimes we get a package that hasn’t sealed correctly or is otherwise imperfect. However, it’s the same great grass fed, grass finished beef we sell otherwise.

So after collecting all the imperfect bags from this spring’s processing, we’re offering Imperfect Bundles at 50% off! DM, email, or call us to reserve yours before we run out!

Please note, these bundles do not contain ground beef, just assorted steaks and roasts. They also are for pickup only at the ranch!

A big day for us, as we turn cattle out on our BLM range for the 2023 season, onto what George thinks is the most feed we’ve had up there in years!

On the one hand, we are fortunate that we can drive our cows to their summer range, rather than having to load them onto trucks. On the other hand, this route takes us across a busy highway, which always makes the trip up slightly stressful. A big thanks to the Saguache County Sheriff’s Department for making our highway crossing a little easier!

As we prepare to turn out on our BLM allotment later this week, it’s safe to say that this has been a good year for the range.

Between having our cows in New Mexico for the latter half of the summer last year, which gave the plants up here lots of opportunity to take advantage of monsoonal rains, and the moisture we’ve gotten this spring, things are looking good!

A few words on scale. I have had a hunch for a while that an often neglected aspect of a person’s being is their preferred scale. It’s not talked about enough. I believe our physical preference for scale influences and reflects our theories of social and political organization and change.

Some people feel too big for physically small things and I am one of them. It took six years as a gardener-farmer to figure this out. It’s part of why I have found my home in grasslands for the past ten years or so, working in big places with big animals. Yet the more I pay attention to these big places and big animals the more I am called to be attuned to the small details that make comprise and define them. Small changes, writ large, make for big changes. The amount of living root or litter in the interspaces between plants determined whether rangeland sheds or stores water. A small percentage change in plant diversity means a lot when extrapolated across 200 square miles. There’s more I could say, but I’ll save it for a proper essay one day. I’ll just add that it’s by combining our scales - our lenses and biases - that we form a complete picture of the world sufficient to finding pathways towards the world we’d like to see. If we only spend time with minds that are oriented just like ours we will feel affirmed but probably won’t learn or contribute a whole lot.

Sometimes things don’t go as hoped/planned, but those moments can also be great learning experiences.

Usually, our cow herd is extremely low maintenance during calving. We’ll check them a few times a day, but the cows need almost no help birthing and caring for newborn calves. However, the cow pictured here had a backwards presenting calf and needed some help getting it out. Our apprentice Cooper was happy to oblige, and got some practice with bovine obstetrics in the process. Now all is well with baby and mama!
