A little barn love

Out to pasture and the sheep parade, running down the road. Sheep joyful to get to waiting grain. We lug buckets of water down and welcome the fitness it brings. Happy sheep, fresh new grass and open space. Serenity covered with wool.

Sunset at the farm and the serenity of sheep

We practice rotational grazing with the sheep. We move portable fencing around the pasture and connect to a solar battery to keep the sheep in and predators out. The sheep eat down an area in about 3 to 4 days. And then we move the fence again. Short grass is not good for them as it tends to get them into parasites. If the meadow grass is two long, it loses its nutritional value. It’s sort of like Goldilocks looking for just right. The meadow grazing is part of a grain, hay and mineral diet our sheep get each day.

Cleaning out the barn on a regular basis is hard work and rewarding. New bedding is healthy for our sheep. Pitch forks and wheelbarrow is how we do it. It is a highly aromatic chore. We do it with love and it always feels good when we're done. Mucking the barn, farm life in real time.
