Sam fell in the pig pen today. He said he tried feeding them the way he saw me do it the other day. And then he said he was “trampled” by them. They look completely harmless, don’t they? Three pigs weighing more than 600 lbs. at feeding time can’t knock a person down. I told him that he couldn’t have watched me correctly because I hold on to the “holy sh*t” bar to keep myself upright so I can’t get knocked over. They are a lot to handle. My beautiful babes. Five more weeks till processing.

We know we’re blessed in being able to eat the meat we raise. Our own bone in ham steak with simple roast potatoes, buttered corn, and baked beans. And we’re watching the new version of Little House on the Prairie on Netflix enthralled with the simplicity of life and all the hardships the town folk endure wishing ourselves to go back and live in simpler times. We will have to admit the original series with Michael Landon is better in our opinion. Good night from our little farm! 💤

Bialy ~ what is a Bialy you ask? A Bialy is a bread roll alternative to a Bagel. Yeast Bread Roll, baked with an indented center, filled with seasoned Onions. Split and toast and fill with fried eggs, cheese, meat, vegetables, or cream cheese. (4) Bialy for $8, 2 of each.

We got into raising animals to put food on our own table. We don’t have crazy green thumbs, but do well with some produce. Tonight’s dinner was burritos filled with shredded braised beef roast from Swamp Hollow Cattle Co. out of Fairfax and our own pork tenderloin slow cooked in the Instant pot with beef broth, sweet corn, refried beans, buttered rice, smothered with Cabot cheddar, topped with fresh sweet cherry and grape tomato pico de gallo and sour cream.

You want to know how decisions are made on this farm on which cows to slaughter? Normally you breed your heifers and cows and keep them for future prodigy. Raise your steers and finish for beef. This one we decided not to breed because she’s dangerous. You wouldn’t know it by looking at her. She’s the mother that would run you over if you gave her the chance to calve. At feeding time just now, she rammed her head into me, lifted me up and threw me against one of the side kick board walls. I’m lucky she didn’t break anything and it’s just bruising. She’s got 60 more days of finishing before it’s her day. Truly, that day can’t come soon enough.

Everyone raises their animals differently. We do pen raising. No concrete floor so they can root. Sleeping quarters in one area. Drinking and mud pit in another. Waste in another area. Pigs are such clean animals. We have plenty of friends who raise their pigs on concrete. Nothing wrong with that. Everyone wants to see pristine set ups. That’s not farming reality. There’s always a lot of mess and a lot of clean up.

Our clients say that our pork tastes fantastic! Well, no doubt. Buzz Lightyear, Woody, and Bo Peep get local Poulin grain supplemented with fruit and veggies from our homestead. Happy pigs = great tasting pork.
