I wanted to make a post of February happenings. I've continued to cook through February and we are gearing up to make the trip to Ft Worth for the SCA World Championships. Graham and I will compete this weekend in Evergreen AL (his first time out this year). In the last few weeks, I've cooked in AL, FL, TN and MO. I was fortunate enough to have a pair of 6th place finishes in Decatur, a 4th and 9th place call in Kissimmee, a win in Livingston and a 3rd and 6th in Springfield. This has allowed me to go to world's in 1st place in the ACE Hardware points race for the SCA. On top of this, I've been able to see Tim and Sandy Brown get a perfect tie, with a perfect score in FL, watch Craig Carter win both an Ancillary and Steak ticket last week in Springfield, and see my buddy Tim Van Doren break his drought with a win in Decatur. It's been a fun month and I can't wait to celebrate everyone's success next weekend. As always thank you to Wicked Pig and Midwest Dust for contributing to the success! Safe travels everyone.

Last weekend Tania and I traveled to Carrollton, GA for the Georgia Steak Champioship. We had a great weekend fellowshipping with friends and other SCA cooks. I was fortunate enough to win the GA State Championship with a score of 253.7. I won the championship belt, cool trophy and earned my 2024 SCA ticket. We have a few comps coming up and practice for Ft Worth in March. Hope to share more soon!

I have been able to cook the last few weekends to support several great groups. These include the Jesse Dylan James Foundation, Byhalia VFW and the Hills Creek Baptist Outreach. I couldn't be as successful without the help of Midwest Dust and Wicked Pig. Thank you to Jeff Jacobsen and Matt Ouverson. Taking this weekend off to camp with Scouts and then back at it.

The last few weeks have been busy with travel and steak comps. Last week I taveled to Tuscumbia AL and cooked in the Mission Q comp on Friday night. Having cooked their BBQ event several years, I knew we’d be treated to a great comp, and it didn’t disappoint. I ended up in 2nd place, just behind Jody Davis. On Sat many of us made the trip to Corinth MS and cooked in the Alcorn Fair cookoff. I olaced 14th in Steak A and 4th in Steak B.

This weekend, we stayed close to home in Decatur AL. It started with a Friday lunch at Big Bob Gibsons with Jack and Lisa Jennings, and Brigitte and Harry Craig Johnson. We set up at Ingalls Harbor to support Mosaic of N AL and the Morgan Co Sheriffs Rodeo. In a rare move, we grabbed dinner after steak turn ins and before awards. Thank you to Beau Burns for joining our family for a second round at BBG. I channeled the PB Pie to a 9th place finish on Friday night in Steak A. Saturday started off with a CFA breakfast, as usual. It was a fun day set up next to Chris Reed and watch his roller coaster of emotions as FL played TN in college football. It was a tense game, right up to the point that I yelled ”nooo” at awards when he said UT intercepted the ball at the end of the game to dash our hopes. At least it didnt dash my steak hopes. I finished with a 1st in Steak B and 6th in Steak C (tied with Beau, but edged him on flavor). Congrats to Craig Carter and Micheal Underwood on their steak wins (A & C respectively). In the heated ancillary race, Criag and Catherine jockeyed back and forth with Craig gaining 1 point on the weekend. Congrats to both.

I couldn't do all this without Jeff Jacobsen Midwest Dust and Matt Ouverson Wicked Pig. Next up is Owensboro!

This weekend I traveled to Brandon, MS for a Labor Day cook. It was held at McClain Resort. This was a first year comp, held in conjunction with a car show, pie eating contest and other activities.. The venue was a great spot with fantastic steaks. I decided to give ancillary a shot and entered "Anything Fair Food". I came away with a first place with a Carmel Apple and earned my Ancillary Golden Ticket. Thank you to Craig Carter for some choclate sauce to compliment it. Steaks finished 15th and 20 something (I honestly don't remember). Next up is Ashland and then maybe some time off.

The last few weeks have been busy on the SCA trail. I managed to place 2nd in Algood TN, won Sylvetser GA but the highlight was definitely Graham winning Dectaur yeserday and earning his golden ticket. Looking forward to heading back to Ft Worth as a family!

This weekend I had the opportunity to cook in an SCA event in Cookeville, TN that raised awareness and proceeds to fight childhood diseases. It started Friday evening with a great dinner at Twin Lakes Catfish farm. I haven't had the chance to hang out with many of the teams up in our new area. It was so much fun sharing a meal with Rodney and Christy Jones, David and Marty Maier, Jack and Lisa Jennings, Randy Todd (the promoter), and his extended family.

The Saturday cook was definitely a tale of 2 steaks. Steak A took twice as long as normal to get done, got really dark and probably took on too much smoke. I was rewarded with a 46 on texture, the lowest taste score and a 46 on overall. It was well deserved.

Steak B was a different story. I had a normal cook, hit the doneness I was looking for and turned in my normal steak. If you're ever around when I do a test cook, you may hear me say "yep, that's my steaK". This time, I was blessed with a 1st place finish. I was able to pass the golden ticket down to Mitch Claycomb.

All in all it was a good weekend. Congrats to Craig Carter on his first in ancillary and Steak A. Catherine Noble for her ancillary win and Chris Reed for getting the pass down golden ticket from Craig! In addition Lori Davis got her ticket in ancillary. Looking forward to a few more cooks in August and hope to see some new folks!

I've not been able to post in a while because but excited to share some recent SCA travels and results. In Aoril I competed in the McDonough Moos is Loose SCA event in GA. We were traveling back to FL after a long week in AL and it was great to see our FL/GA SCA Family. I was fortunate enought to tie for 6th in Steak A and win my Golden Ticket with a 1st place in Steak B. The steaks scored 53.6 and 53.5 in taste. Last weekend, while back in AL we traveled to Wi******er TN and cooked in the SCA event there. This was the first time Graham and I have cooked together since Ft Worth. It was a new enviornment and set of judges for us. Graham had a 13th on Steak A and "not so successful" Steak B. I was fortunate enough to finish 4th in Steak A and 2nd in Steak B. Flavor there was 52.7, 52.1 and 51.5. A huge thanks to Jeff Jacobsen for some OG Dust and Matt Ouverson for Wicked Pig. We tried some new things in Wi******er and looking forward to seeing if they can compete again.

Congratulations to Matt Ouverson on having the first perfect score in SCA history. More importantly, thanks for the memotable call yesterday 😂It was great to rejoice with you!

After a long weekend, I am finally sitting down to reflect on the SCA cookoff in Folkston. What a wild (and crazy) weekend. On Friday night Graham finished 3rd and I had a perfect tie for 1st with Rylee Wright. I was so happy to see her win her Golden Ticket. What a great win for her. On Saturday Steak A, Graham finished 8th and I was 3rd. On Steak B he finished 31st and I was 20th. This year Hal ordered a championship belt for the overall winner. Although that took a few minutes to sort out, it was a close finish between me and Russell Wright. I finished with a total score of 755.8 and 21 SCA points. Russell had 755.2 and 16 points. (close behind was Amy, Jerry, Graham and John) I would like to thank Freddie for the Mt Olive pickle and also bought a neat painting (done by a local artist) from the camp store. Sat dinner with the Johnny Mac crew, Buchans, Crofts, Grahams, Johnsons and Pendrays was so much fun. I even got to take a spin on the bicycle.... A huge thank you to Jeff Jacobsen for keeping us supplied with Midwest dust, which gave us some of the highest taste scores of the comp. (53.7, 53.5, 53.1). I look forward to this event every year and can't wait to see what Hal does with it next year. Congratulations to everyone who got calls and got their Golden Tickets (Nathan, Rob and Craig).

On to day 2 of the Car-B-Que steak cookoff in Folkston Ga. We had an awesome day yesterday. It was a flip from Donalsonville, This time I was 1st and Graham was just behind me. There was a perfect tie for 1st with 253.7. Graham came in 3rd place. Congratulation to Rylee Wright, who also was tied at first, for earning her golden ticket. We have 2 more cooks today. I will try to post later since live feeds are a little hard here.
