Heather's Hens and Horses

Directions

Heather's Hens and Horses A non-profit farm dedicated to making farm life accessible to everyone. I am part engineer part dirty hippy. Its an interesting mix for sure!

Visit us for heritage chickens, vegetable gardens, and beginner horse lessons—we’re always happy to share our knowledge (and our manure!) When I was spending my days as an Environmental Engineer in the oil field all I could think about was how nice it would be to stay in one spot, have a garden, a bunch of animals, and make some jam. Well I wised up, left the oil patch and am doing just that!!! In the wise words of Jane Goodall "What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make"

I want to help kids and families experience horses, chickens, and gardening and make it accessible to all! The world is a crazy place and I want to provide an opportunity for people from all incomes and abilities to unplug, "touch grass", and experience the joy and wonders of nature and farm animals.

Thank you Tracey Roush for the fantastic deal on all of the amazing gear. We are using all of it!

We had a great time at the September Fun show. It was crazy hot but no one seemed to mind. We were to busy having fun! We won some, we lost some, we had great hair, and looked amazing.

We welcomed two new riders and one new horse to the show ring. It was so fun to see everyone cheering each other on and helping each other out. Our new horse Leela made sure everyone knew we were there with her screaming songs of love and joy for all to hear lol. Assistant trainer Alex had her hands full but handled it with grace and patience and managed to walk away with some ribbons non the less.

We look forward to continuing to learn and grow and add more kids and adults to our program.

🏆 You’re Not Always Going to Win.

And that's okay.

Especially at fun shows, you may have different judges with different backgrounds, experiences, and areas of expertise. One judge may know a lot about your particular breed or discipline, while another may have a completely different perspective.

That doesn't automatically mean your horse suddenly became better or worse depending on the ribbon.

Sometimes you’ll win. Sometimes you won’t even place. Sometimes you'll leave wondering what the judge was looking at. 😂

But regardless of where you place, take a moment to thank your horse.

Pet their face. Scratch their neck. Tell them thank you for carrying you around, listening to you, trying their best, and—most importantly—not piling you on your ass. 😂❤️

The ribbon STILL gets hung up.

The horse is the one who got you there.

Ride the horse god gave you. Appreciate the horse. Keep learning. And don't let one judge determine how you feel about the partnership you have with your horse. 🐎❤️

For some horses - the hardest part of the horse show is standing at a trailer tied up for half a day. This is a skill as important as any other and something you can work on.

Miss Leela is going to her first show soon! We start with short intervals and with a friend, then over time make it longer, take the friend away occasionally, let her eat a few meals here, and get her used to life as a show pony. I’m not sure if we will ever get this 15 year old lady to stop pawing 100% but we can at least help with the anxiety from the safety of her own home.
