Another look at Dr. George Washington Carver. Our very first semester class on the farm was about unit study about Dr. Carver. It is interesting to look at articles, books, and other forms of work related to his life of which this article is a wonderful example. His work in nature conservation will also be included in our upcoming class Backyard Wildlife Steward.

A quote from the article, “Carver’s dedication to sustainable farming was deeply intertwined with his spiritual beliefs. A devout Christian, he viewed science and faith as complementary forces and taught his students to pursue both character and knowledge. He compiled a list of virtues, including generosity, honesty, and humility, that he believed defined true greatness.”

“Did you know that we’ve lost nearly 3 billion birds since 1970? Smithsonian Conservation Biologist, Dr. Amy Johnson, shares insights from her research working with farmers in Virginia and describes how they are leading change to help reverse declines and bring birds back.”

This is just one of the topics we will address in our Backyard Wildlife Steward class this fall.
Our farm is working in ways to support birds and their habitats. Teaching students about the decline of birds and the work being done to turn that around is an important aspect of being a steward.

Class begins Thursday, September 10th at 10:00 AM. Due to increased interest we are considering adding another day for the class, this will allow students who cannot attend Thursdays to attend on another day. So the same lesson being taught two days a week is under consideration.

Registration is open for our fall semester course for the 2026-27 school year. Registration is now open for our fall Farm School class, Backyard Stewards: Caring for Creation, Cultivating Responsibility! Homeschool students will explore gardening, pollinators, wildlife, composting, conservation, and practical life skills through hands-on outdoor learning at Morning Glory Homestead Farm on St. Helena Island. Join us this fall as we grow curious minds, caring hearts, and the next generation of stewards.

This course is designed with homeschool families in mind—because we know learning rarely happens in neat age divisions.

Children of different ages will learn side by side.

Younger ones will explore and observe.
Older students will analyze, design, and take on responsibility.

Parents are welcome to stay, especially with younger children or those who need support. Older students may attend independently.

It is flexible. It is layered. It reflects real life.

Children are growing up in a time when natural spaces are changing rapidly.

And yet—they are not too young to begin caring for them.

In fact, they may be uniquely suited for it.

They are observant.
They are curious.
They are willing to act.

When given the chance, they do not just learn about creation—they become good stewards of it.

We watched this video last night, it is very informative. Take a look a share your thoughts.

Imagine those flours and other affected grains used to make your pasta, crackers, cookies, cakes, other store bought baked goods, granola, cereals, breaded items, stuffing mixes etc. Why are chemicals in pesticides and herbicides that are banned in other countries still being used in ours? Have you ever read the labels on the bottles or other containers of pesticides and herbicides? Do you know why farmers have to have a license to use them? Do you know what protection gear is suggested to be worn to protect them when they use it or the proper disposal of the unused products? Just asking!

FYI…Glyphosate or Glyphosate residues and other toxic substances found in some breads! That’s because it’s in the grains used to make the breads, there is another video about the flours.

“Glyphosate is a broad-spectrum, systemic herbicide used to kill unwanted weeds and grasses. It is the active ingredient in hundreds of products worldwide, most notably the commercial herbicide Roundup.”

Be careful and research your grain products.
Everything organic isn’t free of glyphosate or its residue.

Farm Friends, last week we attended the
From Seeds to Shoreline Veteran Educator Workshop at Huntington Beach State Park. This was our fourth year participating in the program.
From Seeds to Shoreline® (S2S) is South Carolina’s only salt marsh restoration program designed for K–12 students and teachers. This year-long program engages participating schools with cultivating and transplanting Spartina alterniflora (smooth cordgrass) to designated areas along the state’s coastline.

This year the training included Seining and a Blue Crab Tagging Demonstration. Park Ranger Mike Walker presented the seining demonstration along with two park staff members while Erica from SCDNR explained the blue crab tagging project.

The seining activity allowed us to observe and identify the creatures that were captured. One of each species was placed in a container for a closer look and identified by Ranger Mike before being released.

Afterwards we participated in crabbing to capture a mature crab for tagging. Of course in order to tag a crab one must first catch a crab!

If you should catch a tagged crab report the catch to the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) can receive SCDNR swag or a chance to win a cash prize.

As Master Naturalists, members of the SC Marine Educators Association (SCMEA), and participants in the From Seeds to Shoreline project we often run into some of the same participants and instructors throughout the year. We’re looking forward to the next SCMEA conference in November. Be on the lookout for how we will implement what we’re learning through activities we’ll host on the farm and throughout the community!
