All around the w**e world—from Côte-Rôtie to Cornas to the Clare—the ideal habitat for world-class Syrah is...a stony hill.

This month, we're excited to unveil the first Syrah produced by Stony Hill since 2019.

Our steep corner of Spring Mountain, with its rocky, well-drained soils, is prime terroir for powerful, soulful Syrah, delivered with grace.

Enter Reid Griggs, a w**emaker who once worked the slopes of St. Joseph alongside Pierre Gonon, and you have an auspicious alchemy.

Our members will be the first to experience the 2023 Syrah, and very soon. Reid made just 100 cases.

A grape variety especially close to W**emaker Reid Griggs' heart also holds an important place in Stony Hill history, with our last vintage produced in 2019.

Reid made just 4 barrels of this labor of love in 2023, and we’ll be sharing it with members soon.

As we prepare to release the Côte Rouge Cabernet Sauvignon from the landmark 2023 vintage, it's a fitting time to hear from our W**emaker, Reid Griggs, about why we make this w**e:

"All our efforts are part of codifying a dream that began over 20 years ago: to see what the light of Stony Hill looks like through the lens of Cabernet Sauvignon. In the inaugural release letter of the 2009 vintage, the proprietors said, 'If you ask why we are now embracing red w**e, we can only say that all of us at Stony Hill love serving it, and we think change is a good thing.'"

The countdown begins. The Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are now a deep purple, swelling with ever-sweetening juice. In the cellar we're readying the tanks and barrels for the fruit to come.

This is the calm before the crush, the most evocative time of year in our forested home. Feel it up close in our The Terroir Experience, riding up our storied hill in our Lexus GX 550 before we taste at The Residence. A handful of late-summer reservations remain.

We're so grateful to see that Stony Hill w**es are featured in restaurants across the country that have earned W**e Spectator's Best of Award of Excellence accolade.

Between Aspen's Catch Steak, Austin's Hestia, Bouchon in Yountville, Enclos in Sonoma, and The Beverly Hills Hotel, our w**es are in some rarefied company among American fine dining w**e programs.

Veraison is here, when the grapes turn from green to purple and begin to soften and build sugars and flavor.

The Cabernet Sauvignon in our Côtes des Pierres blocks at the lower elevation are at around 80% veraison, and the Côte Rouge blocks—the highest elevation on the property—are at around 50%.

Our Director of Viticulture, Macy Stubstad, tells us "This vintage provides lighter yields from a cooler spring and a variation of weather during flowering, but this has had a positive outcome, with looser and smaller clusters. The vineyard team is currently working on fruit thinning to achieve a perfect balance between the fruit and the canopies for ripening."

Harvest will be here before we know it!

Recently we sat down with W**emaker Reid Griggs and asked him about his big epiphany as a w**emaker. His answer was such a simple one.

Back in the 80s, there was a four-year waiting list to get access to an allocation of Stony Hill w**es.

One way Eleanor McCrea would make room on the list was to remove the names of people who had passed away. But she underestimated the multi-generational appeal of Stony Hill.

"The dying business doesn't work anymore, because their children call up and say, "Hey, we want Dad's w**e," she once remarked with a laugh. "Of course we put them back on again."

Pictured is Eleanor's CRM system: index cards.

We make a special effort to select and share w**es with our loved ones and friends on important occasions. It's one of the joys of w**e collecting.

That's why we were so grateful to be mentioned in Jonathan Cristaldi's piece for Decanter last week, "The 18 best Napa Valley 2023 Cabernet Sauvignons to drink with your grandkids."

We build Stony Hill Cabernet Sauvignons to last decades, so it was a proud moment to see our 98-Point 2023 Côte Rouge Cabernet Sauvignon in the same company as Screaming Eagle and Harlan Estate when it came to recommending bottles for long-term collecting.
