No wine shows the mission we’re on at Ink Grade, and the individuality of our vineyard, better than our Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon.

We’ve patiently waited all year to release the 2022 to our members this month, but there’s a good reason for that.

That reason will be familiar to fans of Brunello di Montalcino, Barolo, and Rioja: we take our time. To capture elegance and complexity, we pick on the early side, and do a long, extended post-fermentation maceration, and then an élevage longer than anyone on the mountain: over three years in large-format oval casks. Nobody else has the patience for this.

Theron Ink first planted Ink Grade in the 1870s, which was a period of tremendous growth. The population of Napa County doubled in this decade, to 13,235 people. ⁠

This was also the decade that the Phylloxera root louse devastated Europe, and the supply interruption of European wines led to an explosion of interest in California wines. (It's true—even 150 years ago, restaurants in San Francisco had to have French wines).⁠

Phylloxera was also one of the reasons why Mr. Ink—though he owned vines on the valley floor in St. Helena—chose to plant high on Howell Mountain in 1873. At the time, the thinking was that Phylloxera would not strike at higher altitude in the poor volcanic soils.⁠ ⁠

That wasn't correct, but planting these hillsides was still exactly the right decision.

A 19th century red field blend from Howell Mountain, made with all the care and precision afforded by 21st century winemaking. We are proud to release the sixth vintage of our Andosol Red.

Rarely do brix, acidity, and phenolic ripeness align so beautifully as they did in 2023, and this edition of Andosol reflects the completeness of its growing season: huckleberry, hibiscus, and dusty black plum all sing in harmony above a balanced, succulent palate. The wine is simply a joy to drink.
