The estate was originally four 19th century Napa Valley vineyards, Miravalle, Alba, Chevalier and La Perla, that became one vineyard in the 1990s. The vineyard is planted primarily to traditional Bordeaux varieties for which Spring Mountain is best known: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec. Spring Mountain Vineyard's distinctive mountain wines are noted for concentration of color and flavor, structure, elegance and longevity. The quintessential wine from the estate is Elivette.

This week, we celebrated the bounty of our culinary gardener with a special luncheon featuring Aaron Keefer, our master gardner, and Chef Elliot Bell from in St. Helena. The two once worked together as a chef-and-gardner team at the French Laundry. Today, they manage Charlie’s Garden at Spring Mountain Vineyard, where they carefully plant and harvest specialty produce for Charlie’s restaurant.

Chef Elliot cooked the meal en plein air, with the produce moving less than 100 ft from our garden - to the chef - to the table. Their craft was on full display, from heirloom varieties selected by Keefer, to Bell’s flawless (and delicious) ex*****on of flavor combinations. Blistered peppers, roasted summer squash, nasturtium pesto, marinated cucumbers, and the tastiest kale salad ever, topped with lemon zest from our orchard. Each course was served with Spring Mountain Vineyard wines, including our 2024 Sauvignon Blanc, 2024 Chardonnay, 2022 Chateau Chevalier Estate Cabernet Sauvignon and 2022 Resurrection. Such a treat!

An aristocrat among cultivated palms, the Chilean Wine Palm (Jubaea chilensis) reins our botanical garden with unparalleled grace and grandeur. Standing next to one can be a humbling experience. These palms can live for over a century, often taking decades to develop, with each inch representing an extraordinary amount of time.

These noble palms were a status symbol in Victorian time, brought to California from South America in the mid-1800s. During a time of “horticulture hysteria” and botany obsession, exotic flora from the tropics became a highly coveted display of wealth and adventure.

Its name comes from the early practice of tapping the tree to make “palm honey” and fermented wine. Today, these palms are endangered in the wild, squeezed out of their natural habitat by over-farming and development. Nestled among the other rare species, these two are hard to miss as you stroll the garden - but they are definitely worth seeking out.

The renovations of our sun room are finally complete, just in time for summer. This room, which was part of the original Miravalle home built by Tiburcio Parrot at the end of the 19th century, had fallen into disrepair. With a little TLC (and a lot of nails), we’ve renovated it back to its original charm. With its feeling of fresh air and abundant natural light, it’s perfect for sipping wine in style.
