Nine thousand miles from Guadalajara, downtown Napa is watching the same match. At Estadio Akron tonight, Mexico and South Korea meet with first place in Group A on the line. Mexico opened with a 2-0 win over South Africa, though defender César Montes is suspended tonight after a red card. South Korea rallied to beat Czechia 2-1. Earlier today South Africa and Czechia drew, which means tonight’s winner takes the group outright.
History favors the hosts. This is just the third World Cup meeting between these two nations, and Mexico has won both prior ones, 1998 and 2018. South Korea hasn’t beaten Mexico since 2006. But the two sides drew 2-2 in a September friendly, so nothing here is settled on paper.
Downtown Napa isn’t waiting for the final whistle to celebrate. Chispa, The Garden, Downtown Joe’s, Napa Palisades Saloon, and The ArBARetum all have screens on and rooms full tonight.
