Seavey Vineyard

Seavey Vineyard Seavey is a family-run estate vineyard & winery that hand crafts age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot & Chardonnay

Seavey is a family-run vineyard and estate winery that hand crafts age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay using 19th century winemaking techniques. Our vineyard is nestled in the south-facing hillsides of Napa Valley, where the land is groomed to produce world-class wines. The Seavey Wine Library maintains wine from each vintage produced on this land and provides close friends of the

winery a chance to taste back through decades of Cabernet Sauvignon. In 1981, William and Mary Seavey restored a prized, historic mountain slope vineyard in the heart of Napa Valley, with original vine plantings by the Franco-Swiss Cellar dating back to 1871. Formerly a cattle ranch dating back to the 1880s, the 200-acre property embraces its rustic 1881 stone dairy barn as the winery and tasting room. Seavey produces only 2,000 cases annually, most of which are sold directly to Napa Valley wine enthusiasts. A small amount of Seavey wines are sold in restaurants and retail venues, but they are hard to find, hence the term "cult cabernet". It is sometimes urban legend discovered when spotting Seavey wines on restaurant lists. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate:

What Napa wineries offer vinyl and wine experiences in the tasting room or wine cave?

Algorithms and generic search results love to throw the same three mega-wineries at everyone. They look at data points, not soul.

True wine and vinyl experiences can't be auto-generated. They require a human touch, a deep respect for the classics, and an appreciation for the analog.

**Check it out***
We curated our Napa Valley essential wine and vinyl hit list:

Seavey Vineyard – A masterclass in classic, rugged Napa hillside Cabernet. No shortcuts, no trends, just pure timeless quality produced by Jim and shared by John, Patrick & Nurit. 😉

Hourglass Wine – Where modern terroir meets old-school passion. Chatting with Ian and Jeff feels exactly like finding that rare, original-press vinyl you’ve been hunting for years.

– Mike and Schatzi have built something truly authentic here. It’s small-batch, deeply intentional, and possesses a soul that algorithms completely miss.

Stony Hill – Marcos is keeping the vibe alive at one of Napa's absolute historic landmarks. This place is the definition of a midcentury classic—elegant and beautifully analog.

– When you hang with Miguel, Michael and Justin, you aren't just getting a tasting; you're getting a curated session. It's the perfect mix of great hospitality and killer juice.

Seavey Synchrony

Fred Seavey shares a family story about Seavey Vineyard located in St. Helena, Napa Valley and the importance of caring for the land, vines, people and process as the key to making great wine.

“A few years ago I remember when my dad passed away, we had a memorial service for him inside of our winery.  One of his friends; she comes from France - her family has made wine for multiple generations, and she said this Californian is crazy.  He knows nothing about making wine…  It like turned out to be really good wine.  I think it's the way that one cares for the land and the attention you pay to the vines and the process and the people and the key to try to work in synchrony with all of the things around us.”

Shhh, Meet us in the Library

If you ask anyone in the wine industry about Seavey, you’ll invariably get the same enthusiastic response: “Love Seavey—incredible wines, and man, that library.”

We’ve always been big believers that good things come to those who wait, and our wine library is the living, breathing proof.  Over the last few years, our GM (and the youngest of the five Seavey siblings), Charley, has been the chief curator of ensuring the legacy only gets better with age.

The library is usually a "members-only" perk, but every now and then, the vault door swings open for the extra-nice folks who visit our 1800s stone winery.

Honestly, if you’ve been looking for an excuse to finally “open a book,” this is it.  Just tell everyone you spent the weekend in the library.  Shhhh, we won’t say a word.

Thank you, Jeb Dunnuck for taking the time to taste our estate 2023 wines.   An exceptional vintage all around.  Cheers to your notes and scores below.

2023 Seavey Cabernet Sauvignon

Score: 98 First made in 1990, the 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged 20 months in 70% new French oak. This rich, powerful 2023 sports a saturated purple hue and has an ultra-classic nose of crème de cassis, ripe plum, chocolaty herbs, lavender, and perfectly integrated oak. It's a rich, voluptuous wine from this site that has full-bodied power, ripe, velvety yet big tannins, ample mid-palate depth, and a great finish.

Cellaring: Hide for 4-5 years and drink over the following 30 years or more. Drink Date: 2029–2059 Reviewer: Jeb Dunnuck (12/22/2025)

2023 Seavey Cabernet Sauvignon Caravina

Score: 94 The second wine of the estate, created in 1999 and made with the idea of slightly early accessibility, the 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Caravina is based on 97% Cabernet Sauvignon with the balance Merlot and Cabernet Franc and aged 20 months in roughly 40-45% new French oak. It offers beautiful notes of darker currants, ripe plum, leather, savory herbs, and graphite. Medium to full-bodied, it has a round, layered mouthfeel, supple yet present tannins, and a great finish.

Drink Date: 2025–2040 Reviewer: Jeb Dunnuck (12/22/2025)

2023 Seavey Cabernet Sauvignon Founders Reserve

Score: 98 A tiny barrel selection from four barrels in all new oak, the 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Founders Reserve brings noticeably more finesse and elegance, yet with the classic power and richness of the classic cuvée. Cassis, graphite, scorched earth, violets, and some sappy sage and scrub brush nuances define the aromatics. Full-bodied and beautifully balanced, it offers elegance with fine, polished tannins. It actually has more accessibility than the classic cuvée yet deserves a decade of bottle age and will see its 50th in fine form.

Drink Date: 2035–2075 Reviewer: Jeb Dunnuck (12/22/2025)

As it Rests

At this point in the arc of Summer, it is a natural occurring feeling to reflect on your Summer checklist; what capacity, time and resources you have left for adventure, or expanding your wine experiences.

We at Seavey are no different. However, there are defining moments here at Seavey that keep us present. Such as, a certain angle of a structure, cast in certain lighting anchoring us in the now and calms those future racing thoughts.

This photo is one of the old stone building that sits at the entrance of Seavey Vineyard. It inspires focus and presence of mind; as it rests, so do our thoughts.

For the wine history fans, in the 1870s – when Conn Valley Road was little more than a wagon trail – the land which we now farm was planted with grapes to make a “Claret of high repute.” This wine was judged by the St. Helena Star to be “as fine as one might find anywhere.” Commonly known as the Franco-Swiss Farming Company, this was the pioneering vineyard and winemaking operation of Conn Valley. After roughly thirty years of producing great wines, the company dissolved due to the impact of a phylloxera infestation and Prohibition. For more than a half century, cattle roamed the land and grain was farmed but no more grapes were cultivated until Bill and Mary Seavey acquired the land in 1979.

The structure in this photo rests as it did when Bill and Mary acquired the Seavey vineyard and ranch.

The Art of Restoration
If you had 100s of pieces of art valued at $70,000.00 each; how often would you check on them?

On average 'one' standard sized wine barrel of cabernet sauvignon at Seavey Vineyard holds $70,000.00 worth of really good Napa Valley estate wine, including the cost of the highest quality, thin-stave French oak barrel.

Whatever comes to mind when you think of a winemaker, blend it with the vision and role of a steward or museum curator whose daily task is caring for the vessels of the art as much as the art itself.

Enophiles will love the process detailed below that our winemaker at Seavey goes through to ensure each barrel is curated.  The process itself is incredibly detailed and time-consuming as a daily ritual.  Imagine the focus and dedication of inspecting hundreds of barrels, every square inch for 3 to 4 years each.  It is impressive.

I. Leak Identification:

   A. Visual Inspection: Locate wine-colored blotches on the barrel's exterior.

   B. Moisture Removal: Scrape away surface moisture to pinpoint the leak's origin.

II. Leak Sealing:

   A. Hole Preparation: Use a pick and hammer to create a small, clean hole at the leak point.

   B. Spile Insertion: Insert a wooden spile into the hole.

   C. Securing the Spile: Gently hammer the spile until it's firmly seated (audible feedback from the barrel).

   D. Spile Trimming: Cut off the excess spile flush with the barrel's surface.

III. Finishing and Inspection:

   A. Surface Smoothing: Sand the repaired area to create a smooth finish.

   B. Pore Sealing: Sand the surrounding area to close any opened wood pores.

   C. Post-Repair Monitoring: Re-inspect the barrel after a few days for potential new leaks.

Gather At the Table

For decades this solid oak wood table has been the spot where friends have gathered to share a few glasses with the Seavey family.

It is where Bill Seavey would sample and blend wines with his family and winemaking team including Jim Duane, our head winemaker.

This table is where celebrated journalists discovered the vintages that moved them to share our story with generous prose - and often to award high marks.

This table is where you will taste wines when you visit.

Pull up a chair to the heart of our tasting room.

We invite you to run your hand across the grain of the wood, and taste our wines at a table as aged as the vines that produced them.

- Cheers
