INAUGURAL RELEASE

2023 La Vieille Clé

Composition: 49% Grenache | 25% Syrah | 13% Mourvedre | 13% Counoise

Winemaker: Nile Zacherle

The inaugural release of La Vieille Clé (translated as ‘The Old Key’) was created as a tribute to the wines and vintners of France’s southern Rhône Valley. The inspiration for this wine came after David was honored by the Papal Wine Stewards of Châteauneuf-du-Pape during a ceremonial induction rooted in the region’s rich medieval papal traditions. Presented by the Échansonnerie des Papes with a golden key and bestowed the title of Knight, David experienced a powerful symbol of the shared passion, heritage, and craftsmanship passed from one vigneron to another. Returning to Napa Valley, he was inspired to honor both the historic legacy of this region and the generations of winemakers behind its iconic wines.

Shoot positioning in our Old Vine Cabernet Sauvignon block. It’s a healthy and high vigor spring here in Napa Valley. Years like this require more labor than normal! That’s the life of a wine farmer!

This time of year we are in full shoot growth often called the period of grand growth. While the shoots are reaching the sky the roots are reaching for new ground, called root flush. It’s a period of intense work for our crew. Selecting the correct shoots are critical to setting up a balanced canopy. Good old farming!

David and Nile sit down to taste the 2023 Le Boucher Red Wine. David gives some background on his father, Don Long, who we dedicated this label to. It’s a blend of mostly Cabernet Franc with a 1/3 Cabernet Sauvignon and sourced from our Organically grown Estate Vineyards on Pritchard Hill. It’s magic in a glass! Spring Time! We are busy busy busy mowing, discing , suckering etc! It’s a warm spring and the vines are growing fast! Another beautiful day in Napa Valley!

We are nearly finished with pruning and our head trained vines in front of the winery show a unique approach to it. This blocks shows the ‘Galets’ or Rocks from our soils here on Prichard Hill.

The mustard is out in our vineyards and around the valley! We are about 3/4 complete with pruning and still a lot of cane tying to do. Rain has been absent for a number of weeks and helping us really get ahead!

Another beautiful day on Pritchard Hill and what a sunset! We are pruning the vines and doing what we can before more winter rains come.
