Whisper Vineyards

Owned and Operated by Laura Gallagher and Barbara Perrotta of Borella's Farms. They believe that by continuing the agricultural use of their land, they can help to retain the farming history of Long Island and preserve their family's farming roots dating back to 1945. In 2004, about 10 acres were planted with different clones of Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Albariño, Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc and

Cabernet Sauvignon. In 2012, two major issues presented themselves to Whisper Vineyards; one affecting surrounding neighbors and one affecting the loss of 95% of their Chardonnay and Merlot grape crop. Both were issues that needed resolution so co-owner Steve Gallagher went back to the drawing board to work on a solution. To combat the desecration of the vineyard by birds this year, they recently installed 51,000 linear feet of protective mesh. The new technology, which is a fine mesh much smaller than previous versions, allows he leaves and vines to be exposed while encasing the grapes underneath. Aesthetically, the vineyard looks more picturesque than ever as only the grapes are covered; and the netting hopefully eliminates the need for the customary use of the agricultural canon to deter the birds from eating the grapes. This is a win/win for both the neighbors and the vineyard. We have a sincere interest in creating a model boutique vineyard of the highest quality that will become a true asset to our community and that is why we are especially happy to have found this solution.
