Lisianthus — huge risk… huge investment… huge reward

Sorry for the language, but we don’t do much half ass around here. We put our whole ass into it.

We don’t really dip our toe in anything — cannon balls off the diving board are more of our style.

I purchased 1800 Lisianthus plugs last fall, and I had never even grown them before bedsides 16 plants a few years ago that I bought from a greenhouse.

These 2” plants that were 12 weeks old arrived early May and I stared at the flats that combined cost more than my first car (1998 Buick Skylark — it was purple).

They have become one of our highest demand and favorite crops in a short time. The trick is to buy different groups so they bloom continuously all season long.

I absolutely wouldn’t tackle these delicate beauties without a high tunnel because the winds destroy their stems.

Next year we are tripling our high tunnel space and tripling the lisanthus, ranunculus and tulips.

We will keep growing the stuff that is kind of a pain in the ass to grow because we know you love it and we secretly love the challenge.

If you’re new here, this video sums up the story of our farm. One year ago (tomorrow — my birthday) and we spent 16 hours filming for this little 5 minute clip.

Once this aired, I tell people that the flower business got microwave growth, not crockpot. Not exactly ideal! For example, our website was down and I ended up getting over 1000 emails and Facebook messages in 24 hours. People wanted to buy flowers but they had no idea how, so they just started showing up at the farm (and some just started cutting their own because they “weren’t sure how it worked”😂 😬)

A lot has changed with this business in the last couple of years, and I can honestly say we are having a heck of a lot more fun with the flowers this year than last year!

Beyond blessed to have been able to turn this into a career. This business started out as a fun little side hobby with Josh, and there are so many things about our life that he would no longer recognize… but I know he would be proud of us.

Thank you for being a part of the Sunny Mary Meadow family that this business has become. We appreciate all of you — buying flowers, listening to the podcast, reading the weekly newsletters, and sharing & liking posts on social media to help spread the word of our business… it all helps support us so much!

☀️💐But most of all, thank you for helping me heal. Thank you for keeping some sunshine in our life even on the darkest days. Week 2's "Nursing Home of the Week" and I already broke my own rules and we decided to change things up and make an exception for a different type of recipient. Did you know Monday July 24 was National Self Care Day? Well we helped some special women give themselves some extra care.

Sunny Mary Meadow and Poppy Salon teamed up to bring a stem bar to Anna Marie’s women’s domestic abuse shelter.

I got the conversation going with my friends at Poppy Salon, and they immediately said they were 100% in when I brought up the idea of businesses sponsoring flowers for a nursing home. However, we all quickly wondered if the recipient had to be a nursing home. My response: “Well, I guess it’s my business so I get to make the rules. What do you have in mind?"

They said they wanted to give the flowers to Anna Marie’s, and I can’t think of a better time to do it than national self-care day -- July 24.

Anna Marie’s Alliance provides safety, shelter, support, and referral services to survivors of domestic violence and their children. Their 501(c)3 nonprofit organization in St. Cloud, MN serves people living throughout central Minnesota. Their mission is to provide education, intervention, and advocacy to those affected by relationship abuse with a holistic approach and anti-oppression focus. Their vision is a world free of relationship abuse.

Years of planning and hard work have gotten us to this point. This past weekend, our inaugural weekend, felt like a dream that has finally come full circle. My late husband, Josh, always had a vision of using this farm to bridge the gap between urban and rural. Somehow show people the work behind the products in the grocery store. Sharing the space with you is the first step to achieving that. Field to vase bouquets and experiences. Farm to table.

This week we have a very special guest on the podcast — my 5 year old daughter Vidalia.

In this episode I talk about gardening and flower farming with kids.

It’s important to note, there is a difference. When running a flower business, imagine bringing your kid with you to work every day. I talk about balancing and taking turns and wearing one hat at a time. I’m sure most of you were hoping to hear some “how to” tips — but the truth is, my kids are much happier doing what they want to do and I’m much more productive when there is someone watching them. We use a combination of daycare, babysitters, and a nanny in the summer for the ge business and try to keep our fun veggie garden separate.

I give tips on gardening with kids, and discuss the reality of running a business from home while you have children present.

Ranunculus Festivus for the Rest of Us!

Come on out to the farm this Sunday, June 11 starting at 3 PM and grab your ranunculus. We will plan on 3 PM to 5 PM, or until sold out.

$20, $30, and $40 options. Cash or Venmo. Sorry, we are unable to make change as it is self serve.

Self–serve farmstand style. I’ll be restocking as they sell out, but I think I have enough for about 50 bouquets!

There are still a couple sign up spots for Friday and Saturday. I believe there are four left for Friday and seven left for Saturday. I will update this post if they are sold out. When you click on it, it looks like a lot more because of the scheduling process. You don’t have to come at that specific time, and you can indicate your approximate pick up time at your convenience when you sign up.

My flower subscription holders got first dibs on buying their bouquets of ranunculus.

I am going to just keep picking and fill up the cooler over the next few days and see how many I have by Wednesday. I am hoping to have another 50 dozen or so. I’ll send out a sign-up link in this week’s email newsletter. Make sure you check your email on Wednesday if you want to a bouquet of ranunculus! This is your chance for non subscription holders to enjoy them! Words can’t even describe how breathtaking they are, and I can’t believe I was able to grow thousands of stems of these beauties. I really don’t think they will last past this week though because the plants quit blooming after some prolonged heat.
