The past two days we had the great honor of hosting Rikus van der Merwe of South Africa at our farm. We spent a great deal of time sorting sheep, and Rikus typed each one according to strict South African standard. We have strived to stay true to the SA standards since we began our Dorper journey, and are proud to say we are now a majority Type 5/Type 4 flock, with a few Conformation 5/Type 5 ewes. But none of that compares to the wealth of knowledge we gained from our short time with Rikus. We look forward to utilizing that added wisdom into our plans for the future. Thank you Rikus! 🇺🇸🇿🇦

Tonight I had a few minutes to reflect on the fact that this tree, which suffered lightning damage many years ago, still continues to provide a much needed break from the heat for over 20 years now. I played on it as a child, and now our children get to play on it and come up with all kinds of very imaginative names for each of the sheep along the way.
You never quite know what each day will bring, especially with livestock, so for now we’ll all enjoy good company, the cool shade, and the chance to slow down and laugh at the ewe who’s new unfortunate name is… “spider egg” 😄

With heat indexes over 100+ and high humidity forecasted for the rest of the week, it seemed like a good time to utilize this shaded patch of weeds. Looking forward to seeing how this area looks after a few days of Dorper grazing 💪

Couldn’t help but notice the morale in the barn tonight. Guess when you go from -9 to 21 degrees it does feel like a heat wave for all. Even with a bit of snow still stuck to her nose, this late fall born ewe sure seemed to carry a smile on her face
