In 1943, Ken Freiberg began his career as a firefighter in St. Paul, Minnesota. Promoted to Captain of Firehouse Number 14 in 1953, he became renowned for his oven-baked beans with bacon—a dish so beloved that locals would visit the fire station hoping for a taste.

By 1964, after much encouragement, Ken sold his first dish of these beans at the Minnesota State Fair, marking the beginning of Captain Ken’s Foods. Today, over 55 years later, we continue to honor his legacy by slow oven-baking our beans from scratch and offering a variety of hearty meals like Firehouse Chili, Tater Tot Casserole, and Chicken Chow Mein.
