🚨 Invasive species spotlight 🚨

Spring is finally here, and you may have noticed this early spring bloomer popping up in lawns and woodlands: Siberian squill (Othocallis siberica). Its bright blue flowers may look beautiful, but this ornamental plant is a case of an escaped garden plant gone awry.

While not officially designated as invasive in Minnesota, it can spread quickly, crowd out native spring blooms, and disrupt local ecosystems if left unchecked.

What you can do:
β€’ Control the spread by removing flower heads before they seed
β€’ Thin invaded areas by pulling the entire plant out at the bulb: The plant can be composted, but should get to at least 130 degrees Fahrenheit to ensure the plant dies.
β€’ Clean your shoes or equipment after hiking, recreating, or gardening in an area invaded with squill.
β€’ Consider planting native alternatives!

There was such a nice article in the Monitor written about our Community Circle Team. The team donated over 1,300lbs to Keystone Community Services last year alone!!

Our work at Keystone is supported by dedicated neighbors, like the Midway Green Spirit Community Garden! Six years ago, Green Spirit began donating their harvest of fresh vegetables to Keystone. Since then, over 900 pounds of tomatoes, kale, herbs, eggplants, and other nutritious veggies grown by the volunteers at Green Spirit have been delivered to individuals and families who visit the Food Center. We built new compost bins today!

Like any good project, it took a couple of trips to the hardware store, but it is a huge improvement from our old pallet compost system. Big thanks to Andrew for leading it and to everyone who came and help build it!!
