Minnesota's first brewery, the legendary Yoerg Brewing Company has become the go-to destination European-style brewpub in the Twin Cities and entire Midwest. At 19 years of age, Yoerg moved to the United States, first settling in Pittsburgh, moved to Galena Illinois soon after and finally settled in St. Anthony first opened a butcher shop in St. Paul, but soon saw a great need for a brewery in thi

s growing town and founded Yoerg Brewing Company where Eagle and Washington streets used to meet below the present parking lot of the Excel Center, ten years before Minnesota became a state. From the beginning, quality was always the first order of the day. Yoerg Brewing Company was the first brewery to open in Minnesota, and the family built a sterling reputation for their magnificent beers right from the start. However, Yoerg wanted to grow and improve, and in 1871, he moved two blocks south to the then predominantly German West Side on Ohio Street and built an extensive stone brewery. His new venture consisted of three buildings and carved out nearly a mile of underground cooling caves along the Mississippi River to produce and age pure lagers just like his ancestors in Bavaria had done. This new brewery would become one of the most modern in the country, with steam-power and a then state of the art assembly line that soon was churning out over 20,000 barrels a year of beer. By 1891, Yoerg Brewing Company was producing 35,000 barrels a year and was the largest brewery in Minnesota. The beer was distributed throughout Minnesota in both kegs and bottles, with the kegs being made at the facility in the company’s own cooper shop. This was a true family operation, with Anthony’s wife Elovina managing the business, and their seven children all taking active parts in the brewery. The eldest son Anthony Jr was born in 1854, graduated in 1874 from the University of Minnesota and became the brewery’s General Manager soon after. Anthony Jr was an ambitious man, and was very active in local politics, being elected to the St. Paul City Council in 1890, the school board in 1896 and the State Legislature in 1903. Brothers William, Frank, Henry and Louis Yoerg were all involved in the now wide array of family businesses, overseeing the vast real estate holdings as well as managing the bookkeeping department. After Anthony Sr. died in 1891, the boys were well prepared to take over the operation and brought the brewery into it’s greatest era of producing Minnesota’s finest beers. The Yoerg family survived Prohibition by successfully producing soft drinks and milk, when repeal came about in 1933, they were back in full beer production. Unfortunately, times changed in the brewing industry across the nation, and by the time the Brewery finally closed its doors in 1952, Anthony Jr’s son Alfred was the third generation Yoerg to run the brewery. Today, 60 years after their demise, Yoerg Brewing paraphenalia is still some of the most treasured collectables in the country, and the name as revered as it was 150 years ago. those who remember, the Yoerg beers were always considered the finest ever produced in Minnesota, and are still today, held with the utmost reverence in the state’s brewing industry.

Hirter Morchl Dunkel is now on tap.

If you caught their Privat Pils on tap a few weeks back, you already know what Hirter does well — clean, confident brewing from one of Austria's oldest independent breweries. The Morchl is their dark lager. Malty and smooth, it's a classic Austrian Dunkel that's approachable and unpretentious. It joins our dark lager rotation alongside Yoerg's Bohemian Dark. Both are perfect to accompany long evening conversations.

Available now on draft.

☀️ Last day for "The Eastern Front"

Four beers. Four countries. One flight.

Think of it as a slow trip along the Danube, starting with the golden lagers of Poland and Slovakia, drifting through the dark cellars of Bohemia, and arriving at a rich Ukrainian porter as the river meets the Black Sea.

🍺 Zatecky · Golden Pheasant · Kozel Dark · Lvivske Porter 📋 Four 4oz pours · $19.95

Today's the last day for the flight. If the dark lager from Bohemia caught your attention, ask about Yoerg's Bohemian Dark, our house beer born from the same tradition, where German and Czech brewing have been one conversation for centuries.

This Friday through Sunday, we're running "The Eastern Front", a flight that takes you across the entire region our new house beer, Yoerg's Bohemian Dark, comes from. Four beers, four countries, one story: from the crisp pale lagers of Poland (Zatecky) and Slovakia (Golden Pheasant), to the eminently drinkable dark lagers of the Czech Republic (Kozel), to the rich, complex porter traditions of Ukraine (Lvivske). It's a masterclass in Eastern European brewing in four 4oz pours.

Possmann Pure Cider is pouring. If you've been waiting for the gold standard of German Apfelwein to show up on a humid August afternoon in Saint Paul, here it is. Crisp, clean, exactly what you need. We're serving it in 13.5oz ($9.95), 10oz ($7.95), and 4oz taster ($4.95) pours.

We're also bringing back De Koninck Bolleke. The iconic beer of Antwerp since 1952, Bolleke takes its name from the distinctive chalice it's served in — "little chalice" in Flemish. Toasted biscuit, light caramel, a hint of spice. It's the beer that defined a city.

The taps have been changing quickly recently. Come in and see what's new!

Tripel Play is here!

We're running two flights Friday through Sunday — each one a different expression of the Tripel, one of Belgium's most celebrated beer styles. The first is straightforward: four of the world's benchmark Tripels, side by side. The second is for the curious: rare, unconventional takes, and beers from small producers who've earned their reputation the hard way.

Flight 1: The Tripel Crown — $19.95 Gouden Carolus Tripel | Scaldis Tripel | Straffe Hendrik Tripel (on tap) | Corsendonk Agnus Tripel

Flight 2: The Artisanal Cellar — $24.95 La Trappe Tripel | De Dolle Dulle Teve | De Glazen Toren Ondineke | Gulden Draak Dark Tripel

As an added bonus, if you order either flight, you get $2 off a full pour (0.33L) of Straffe Hendrik Tripel from the tap (until the keg kicks). Taste it on the flight, then sit with a full glass. That's how you really get to know a beer.

Westmalle Duo is also pouring on tap if you want to round out your Tripel education.

New On Tap: Westmalle Duo
The monks at Westmalle have blended their world-famous Tripel with their Trappist Extra. The result is Duo: complex, refined, and only available on draft. We're serving it in proper Westmalle chalices at $12.95 for a 0.33L pour, or $4.95 for a 4oz taster.

If a Trappist Tripel blend piques your interest, don't miss this weekend's special flight offerings. We're running our annual "Tripel Play" event Friday through Sunday. This year we're featuring two distinct flights of four Tripels each. The "Tripel Crown" at $19.95 for the classics. The "Artisanal Cellar" at $24.95 for the rare stuff. Plus a special on Straffe Hendrik Tripel, which is currently on draft, for anyone who orders a flight.

Duo is pouring now. Full details about Tripel Play tomorrow.

𝐘𝐨𝐞𝐫𝐠'𝐬 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐳𝐢𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐞

Our brewer Brennan teased something fun a while back. Here it is.

Grodziskie is a nearly extinct Polish beer style. It uses smoked wheat and has a low ABV, high carbonation, and a delicate character. Brennan brewed ours with 100% Weyermann smoked wheat malt and Saaz hops, staying true to tradition. It's 3.8%, which makes it the perfect sessionable beer.

We're serving it in our standard Yoerg glassware. 16oz for $7.95, 10oz for $5.95, or a 4oz taster for $3.95.
